It's hideous, but where does it come from, and what are people referencing when they make a design like this?

This predates Jersey Shore. Affliction and Extreme Couture - both MMA related apparel - were heavy hitters. Ed Hardy to a degree, and wasn't he a tattoo guy originally? I know this stuff was around before the MMA stuff. Probably had a shirt or two with some more minimal aspects of this years ago.
What year were grunge flourishes really trendy? 2004/2005?
