Finally got to sleep at 4.30. Always have sleep issues a day before, during and after a full moon. I'm glad it's a full moon Friday though... Shenanigan time!

I don't think it's gravity, we're too small and too far away, we would be far more effected by things closer to us, like another human being for example.
I used to live in Broome in Western Australia, it's a strange place with big moons, huge tides, and no other towns for a thousand miles. One of my friends was a nurse, and it was a well understood fact that full moon days were when things got out of control. Tourists, locals, Aboriginals, all got crazy.
I wonder if there is any good data on this?
- I read on another site that hospital staff would pay people to take their shift on full moon.SunSunSun
- what the FUCK? The Moon changes TIDES and affects women's menstrual cycle. Of COURSE it affects us.monospaced
- The gravity of another person is negligible at best, and FAR smaller than the moon's. You on crack.monospaced

Every time you don't sleep well and notice there's a full moon, you make a mental note of it. Every other time you don't sleep and there isn't a full moon, you think nothing of it, reinforcing the connection between full moon and bad sleep.

It's pretty common knowledge butill say it anyway. Tis is where the origin of the world 'lunatic' comes from as it is/was believed that the moon effect people's minds and behaviour.
It makes sense. The moon moves the oceans... We are, as the alien on star trek once put, bags of mostly water.
- common knowledge isn't the same as science factFax_Benson
- Thanks captain obvious. I just meant that I'm sure most people have heard of it.set

Why not just the fact that it lights up everything? People are more inclined to stay out and get up to all sorts of things if they can actually see... ie on a full moon. Always seemed obvious to me, though bound up with theories of mind controlling moon gravity.

Apparently there have been scientific studies about this and they've all drawn pretty inconclusive results. Most people are really skeptical about it which I understand.
I personally think there is something in it with the history surrounding it and my own experience:
I never have trouble sleeping. If I do, I know the reason ie. coffee or mega stress or whatever. The times when I have absolutely no reason to be sleepless and I'm physically tired I'll check the moon cycle and it's always full or almost full.
So from my own experience I would say there's something in it.

A lot of astrology directly correlates lunar cycles to energy levels. My sign - cancer - is said to be governed by the moon, and that a cancer's energy levels wax and wane with the moon.
Take what stock in that you will. I have to generally agree with you though and have noticed that when the moon is at it's fullest I tend to feel more energized / aware / alert than when it is a merely a sliver. I know it probably sounds like horse shit and you could attribute energy level to a million different things but... whatever, it's kind of fun to think that this giant rock in the sky impacts life on earth.

There's a lot of research showing that light in the evening/night is enough to alter sleep patterns. Before the rise of indoor lighting, people went to bed when it was too dark to see without a candle, but then they would wake up for a few hours in the middle of the night, socializing, eating, and having sex, then got back to bed until the morning.
Sometimes I notice I have trouble sleeping around the time of a full moon, but this week I've slept like a log, and I'm sleeping in an extra hour or two each morning instead of going to the gym.

Yep. If it happens too often, get some exercise.

googling the phenomenon shows I'm definitely not alone in this. Pretty damn weird though if you think about it.
Thanks inteliboy - I actually swam loads today... but yeah that usually is a good one.

Weird dreams.

Yep.. and the computer doesn't really help. I found Flux to be a good app to slowly dim the screen as the night goes on. Just don't be color correcting late at night, or make sure it's disabled.

Yes! I tossed and turned all last night and now I just realized it's almost 1 am. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
