There's a lot of research showing that light in the evening/night is enough to alter sleep patterns. Before the rise of indoor lighting, people went to bed when it was too dark to see without a candle, but then they would wake up for a few hours in the middle of the night, socializing, eating, and having sex, then got back to bed until the morning.
Sometimes I notice I have trouble sleeping around the time of a full moon, but this week I've slept like a log, and I'm sleeping in an extra hour or two each morning instead of going to the gym.
