GeorgesII, I know what your saying. Its called "Theory and Practice"
Example: A Theory may not work in practice and also something can work in practice and not in Theory.
An Example Story. This is a Thinking Exercise based on a true story.
A tribe elder in africa was telling his fellow tribes people a story in early spring. The story was about a specific tree, who's wood is used to make a canoes so the tribes people can fish in the river.
The tribes elder told his tribes people that when this tree bares fruit, evil spirits live in this tree. If you make a canoe from the wood of this tree when evil spirits live in it, the Evil spirits will course you and you will die.
The European Missionary stationed with the tribes people thought that story was absurd and ridiculous.
To prove the tribe elder wrong he decided to build the canoe against the tribes beliefs. He picked a tree that bore fruit and started to make the canoe. He chiseled out the wood to form the canoe with anger until he was finally done. With his canoe finished he proclaimed "see there is no evil spirits" as he floated his canoe and jumped in to paddle into deeper waters. Minutes after the canoe capsized and the european missionary drowned. The tribes people proclaimed "it is true that evil spirits lived in the tree".
Why did the canoe sink? as it turned out when this tree bares fruit, certain very small worms use the tree for breeding thus making the wood unfit to use for a canoe.
The European Missionary unaware and ignorant dismissed the story without trying to figure out the essence of why they told this story.
The tribes people may have been wrong in theory but where right in practice.
This is some of the issues people face when they are arrogant in thinking about belief systems.

To believe that there is some kind of supreme intelligence that gives a fuvk a out your worthless little life is naive and thick in the extreme.
To believe that we are the highest intelligence that exists is naive and thick in the extreme...

In the story of the boat the missionary undertook an experiment to test his theory with empirical methods i.e. building and testing a boat.
He was able to falsify his theory correct through the scientific method. While it would appear to support the theory of the tribe the experiment falsified the theoretical framework utilised by the tribe to describe their theory.
In doing do he/she was able to advance the theory of the tribe by showing them that their analogy of an evil spirit is in fact a real living worm.
On the basis of this testing of the theory through the scientific method the tribe cam become enlightened and stop telling each other stories about evil spirits.
So in summary, what the boat story is suggesting that the theory of god can be wrong for various reasons i.e. ignorance, bounded rationality etc. and that religious people have to use "faith" (or evil spirit stories) as a mechanism to compensate for the cognitive dissonance brought about by the fact that their theory of a god is untestable through empirical methods.

I've seen Joel Osteen a couple of times. I think on Larry King once. I don't know him that well, but yes, his delivery and demeanor is a little better than most of those other religious leaders.

I remember my grandfather saying something like....
I don't believe in religion or any god, but I think that most of humanity needs to believe in religion and a god, otherwise they fear they'll go crazy, and so much of what keeps people in a somewhat moral life seems to depend on fear of an angry god, or fear of an angry congregation that it may be necessary, as too few people can think for themselves when it gets really difficult....

Reading stuff like this makes you realize conservative Christians view world events differently:
Harvest Ministries leader Greg Laurie concluded the last of his three radio interviews with Calvary Chapel founder Pastor Chuck Smith on Wednesday by asking him about the future of Israel.
Affirming that the current threats against Israel are a sign of the end times, he stated, "The Bible tells us that the Lord is going to gather them back into the land and there is going to be an endeavor to destroy them. It is interesting that Iran is one of those nations that will be aligned together with Russia in the attempt to destroy [Israel]. It's interesting how they are all coming together now.
"We see the problems that are over there and we realize that it looks like we are right on the border of the fulfillment of Ezekiel 38 and 39."
Earlier this week, the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, visited President Barack Obama in the White House. At the meeting, that included a discussion with their national-security advisers and a 30-minute chat alone, Netanyahu gave Obama a decorated scroll of the story of Esther from the Bible.
The book of Esther tells the story of how the beautiful Esther and her cousin, Mordechai, plot to keep the evil Haman from murdering Persia's Jews. Laurie asked Smith what the significance of the gift to Obama from Netanyahu might be.
"It was during that time that Ester was used by the Lord to save the nation of Israel from eradication that was planned by Haman, who was part of the Neo-Persian empire," Smith said. "[Haman] had a day all set up when they were going to put a bounty on the head of every Jew throughout the area."
