SO, I've been through a few rounds of interviews with another agency and they made me a "you're crazy if you don't take this" offer. So I accepted and went through process of filling out some forms and doing a drug test.
Now I told them I didn't want to give notice at my current agency until the offer was official and I'm given a start date (which they actually say too in the offer letter it's not official until those 2 things clear).
So, I've just been cleared and put in my notice today. I really did not expect them to strongly ask for a chance to counter, but my current agency did. So now I'm faced with an awkward situation.
If my current agency counters with a comparable/better offer, how do I contact the agency I accepted the new position from and reverse my acceptance without seeming like a dick? Thoughts? Don't get me wrong, I don't feel like I owe them to follow through on my offer or anything, or that it's set in stone (I don't think that kind of stuff ever is I think until you walk through the door). It's just I'm not very experienced in these specific type of situations. I feel like I should brace myself for a tense conversation, since I would be putting them in a uncomfortable spot.
Also, I've been dealing primarily with their HR guy and have not talked to the hiring manager/CDs outside of my few interviews. So in this case I would be contacting this HR dude to let him know (who's in another state).
Thanks guys.

Go to the new place... change is good.

it's like being between two girlfriends. you'll figure out which one you really want and the other will get mad and hate you.

Go with the place that DOESN'T drug-test.
Even if you don't do drugs, it shows that they have the inability to trust an adult to not come to the work place high/stoned.

I was going to say that! ^

Did you sign the offer and send it in?
An offer doesn't supercede a counter offer. Be clear on what happened, how money is a motivating factor for you to reconsider, but also how you're eager to not prolong the situation.
If you signed it and sent it to the new place, you can't really go back on that without burning bridges. Next time inform both parties about your intentions before signing anything.

I realize that its not really the question you're asking - but it shows a failure, at a systemic level to me.

Are you really only leaving because of the money?
- omahadesigns0
Drug test, really? Is it the government?
You didn't sign a contract, right?
- omahadesigns0
GEEK.

You went for those interviews for a reason. Take the new job.

First, there's a reason you interviewed to go to a new agency. If the only motivation was to get more money/love, I'm not sure why you wouldn't have approached your current employer since it sounds like there's already a solid relationship.
Second, if you're worried you're going to come across like a dick, please get over it. You're pulling a dick move, but if it works for you, then you have to honor your personal interests and not worry about the feelings/perceptions others have. Anytime you get into negotiations for yourself, there's a chance you'll be a dick to someone...it just happens. Do know that recruiting/HR folks maintain crazy connected networks, so folks do talk. That said, if you have the talent and they have the need, anyone can overlook hurt feelings over time.
Third, ditch the "Since 1986" off your site. Your site presents itself as a portfolio and office. People are born, offices are established. Unless you've been landing contracts since 1986, which at age 26 would be impressive, please don't be this guy. Please don't be another solider in the "I've been creating since I was born" army. You can help end this trend. Please do the right thing.
Best of luck with either option, and best wishes for continued success!

Drug money?

You are Steven Seagal so this must be a CIA job. I'd take it.

Turn them both down and move to the country.

Why did it take you leaving for them to offer you a raise/promotion? Take the new job.
- Stugoo0
You're leaving for a reason, a raise will only make you forget about that for a while. Take the new job.
