is there a big difference between getting a laptop with windows home vs professional?

according to a friend in IT, pro allows you to setup stuff so you don't have to re-install windows every 6 months... i.e. protect registery, etc..

Sticking with the home version
home lacks:
Domain Join
Remote Desktop - more powerful than remote assistance
Location Aware Printing
Group Policy Editor
Encryption
Network Backup
Support for Windows XP Mode for legacy applications
Also, Windows 7 Professional carries a longer support system than Windows 7 Home Premium, Microsoft will support Windows 7 Professional for up 10 years, while consumer editions such as Home Premium have a life cycle of about 5 years.

stick with Home, spend $$ on Windows 8 Pro upgrade eventually...

From my experience, it's really not a big deal unless you want to have "XP Mode." I believe that you need the professional version for that.
But it was jut announced that Windows 8 is being released Oct. 26, so maybe just hold out for that. I've been playing around with the pre-release version on an old laptop of mine and it seems pretty fast and snappy so far. Seriously, it made a 5 year old laptop feel like new... but then again I haven't installed any software that could potentially bog it down.
- why would you want xp mode? I'd go for NT mode instead.Llyod
