it's not the worst day of your life, it's the worst day of your life so far.

A drink with mates sound cliche but it has always helped me in the past.

Sure it's painful, but in a just-rip-off-the-bandaid way.
You were not designing; which is what you wanted to do.
You were not concentrating; you can blame some of this on the fact that it was a menial job. But don't forget that this is what cost you the job.
Rent is due; nothing like financial obligations to make someone wake the fuck up, straighten up, and light a fire under one's ass.

This is your chance to reinvent your self.
Take what ever job you can get for the moment and build your work.

Sorry man.
Sign up for unemployment ...tomorrow. You will get something, in the mean time you can take classes in web if you like, but there are other print jobs out there... make up some business cards and network like crazy within the circles/facets that you'd like to work for.

Sorry to hear that mang!
I have been Laid off in the past TWICE and it sucks. But in the end it always works out for the best. Don't panic, channel that energy to improve your portfolio and resume, start sending to agencies in the area, and take some classes for interactive design. If you work w a big agency you don't need to program anything, just your understanding of layout/ content organization plus some basic understanding on how thing works, should be enough.Best of luck man! keep us posted!

Lost an account recently too - http://www.qbn.com/topics/670484… Today is a new day, so full of opportunity, more than yesterday was.
Think about it, were you happy doing the shipping job? Ever? I'd dread going to work everyday being a designer and having to spend most of my role working with shipping.
Be happy. Now. Update that resume and your skillz.
I know I'm making it sound too easy - but it's really that easy. Decide that it is and start moving forward. The sooner you do the sooner your new path can start progressing. I remember a story of some head of some country's daughter was tragically killed, and the next day he arrived at an official event when everyone thought he'd be on his way back home to his country and when asked why he was still there he said (I can't really remember it verbatim but it went kinda like this): "I could have gone into a dark pit where I could ask questions like why her? why my family? why me? I could seek revenge on the people that did this. But I saw nothing good coming from that . . . Well, after alot of thought I knew eventually one day I'd have to accept what has happened . . . I decided that day is today, and am moving forward."
Be happy designing somewhere else. "It's only when we've lost everything that we're free to do anything." (you are not your khakis)

I dunno, your portfolio isn't very inspired.

I mean:
Your type skills and craft need some work. Maybe it's okay for Memphis though.

Bigbaby, about not having web experience, there is a ton of articles on transitioning from print to web. If you go to a bookstore and check out the design mags, there is probably someone with an article right now on this subject.

I was listening to an interview with Wes Anderson today on NPR. He got into telling a story about how he was fired from one of his first jobs working for his father. He admitted it was for laziness. The interviewer could believe how such a detailed film directed could be fired for simple laziness. His response... "my heart just wasn't into it."
