How to do this effect to an image?
I've been playing with bitmap settings/adjustment layers/color fills/blend modes and am getting close but not quite to the point I'm hoping for/need. Am I on the right track and just need to keep at it? Or is there a specific method that someone knows of?
Any help is appreciated.

- AE has a few presets that do this effectmoldero
- That was my first instinct/thing I tried when starting this - doesn't really do exactly what I need.duckseason
- Don't really know my way around AE - would it be easy to do this and spit it back out as a JPG?duckseason
- just make a monotone image (this blue or whatever), then set your stripes layer to overlay. done.scarabin
- check your mail, i sent you a psdscarabin
- its more than the scan lines no? you gotta change the photo to a 2 color, then add the lines in overlay... i think that should do itdconstrukt
- that's what i just saidscarabin
- There's an effect in Photoshop that's been around since the 90s called Mezzontint. FIlter - Pixellate - MezzontintCyBrainX

- yea, to make these animations look really neat, you should do a lot of frame by frame stuff and take care of the timing...feel
- so anything you throw in the frames should work nicely, just mimic scanlines, or the way monitor draws stufffeel

All the bumps, specular highlights and stuff could be done in AE or 3D programs... whichever you're most comfortable with I reckon.

thanks, I'm working in AE and breaking things down, because it looks like lots of things are happening in that clip.
another question: on a mac I'm used to work with ProRes codec to sends files between programs.
Now I'm on a windows7 machine. what's the equivalent codec to ProRes for working on a windows machine?

3d or some sphere texture thing in AE?
- you could do it animating the maps first and then applying it to a sphere in max. The map is just...maikel
- playing with opacity levels and alpha channels and can be done in AE without much effort. Sourcing the maps is probably...maikel
- ...probably the hardest part
maikel - these maps all available for free from NASA earth observatorymonNom
- It's all done with mirrors.boobs
- most likely 3d, with the camera crane parented to the center of the world, in AE would be just a painfeel

There's nothing about it to me that screams it was made in a full 3d app. I wouldn't bother personally, everything in the vid is totally possible in AE. Definitely looks kind of after effectsy.
decent AE 3D Earth tut,

When I watch space documentaries I always think about making planets and galaxies and different space effects in after effects. It would be fun to do for work.

check out these videos it gives a pretty good how to 'datamosh'...
https://www.youtube.com/playlist…
basically it has to do with the keyframes that are used in video compression. If you remove a keyframe the compression doesn't know what to do with the next frames a glitch is created.

nice thread, could some one give some nice explanation on how to do datamosh?
