Clients dont like Flash anymore, that's a fact. Everything is ruled by the demand

Anyone here still use Director for anything? http://www.lingoworkshop.com/Art…
- Wow...Director. That's a throwback. I remember using that.fyoucher1
- i used that in cawledgeteh
- Look at when Director got 3D acceleration... we're just getting that in Flash now. This level of lazyness on Adobes part is why Flash is starting to flounderanimatedgif

I really like the discussion so far.
For any flash coders who would like to migrate (or extend would be better put) to Javascript, I would really recommend Grant Skinner's http://createjs.com/
It uses syntax almost similar to AS3, I've had some really nice results with it.
- some interesting stuff at createjs.comvaxorcist
- wonderful, thanks :)mikotondria3

^ They all have timelines, they all use keyframes, they all animate things.
I'm talking about UI not what they output.
Thought that was obvious, sorry.

"tool like After Effects or any 3D software can see the animation system in Flash is a complete joke"
those are complete different tools.

"online creativity has been circumscribed by just one man with a ruthless marketing plan."
Shantanu Narayen has done more to kill Flash than Steve Jobs ever did. Remember all those wasted years when they could have been innovating when they just sat back pushing Flash as a video player.
Remember when they tried to force a square peg into a round hole by pushing it as a Web 2.0 app platform when that was flavour of the day.
Remember that 2 years they wasted pushing it as a mobile app platform. All this time their animation and multimedia tool sat neglected as their own developers all just use FDT/Eclipse these days.
I haven't a fucking clue why any of you designers are defending it when Adobe hasn't given a shit about you for about 10 years now, they just tried to push it into more lucrative markets than flashy UIs and animation. Anyone who has used a decent animation tool like After Effects or any 3D software can see the animation system in Flash is a complete joke and Adobe doesn't give a shit.

I used to flash kids and their moms at the local park. It was a phase.

Steve Jobs started the death of Flash and I think Adobe was passive about it and now is allowing it to transform it's purpose for some other niche (for good reasons) and letting the browser makers, the W3C, and web dev's help grow other web-based technologies to replace the plugin. I'm a Flash guy and at first I was like WTFFFFF but now I think it's a good thing. I think Adobe is also looking out for it's Flash folks by creating apps that will make it an easier transition from Flash to HTML. I started teaching myself JavaScript and if you code ActionScript, you'll find it really familiar.
People say it can't do what Flash can do but I believe it will soon. Flash was crap when it first came out compared to now if you've worked with it that long. I think HTML will make that evolution faster than Flash did simply because there's more of a need for it now, people are aware of the situation, and people use the internet more than they did back in 1998 - 2004. You see Adobe and other folks coming up with ways to make similar Flash effects in HTML5 (i.e. blend modes are coming, filter effects, etc etc)...and people are moving fast to make these transitions. About 6 months ago people said it'll take until 2022 for HTML5 to transition over but I think it will happen MUCH sooner than that, I'd say 5 or 6 years. And in 5 or 6 years, I'd bet that there will be a ton of features in HTML and a lot of fixes to the current issues that you might see happening. I also think browser makers will make updating the browser easier and possibly even automatic so we won't have to worry about "is it compatible with this browser". I'd bet there's some kind of script in the making that even takes care of all of that automatically.
However....
Just like Flash had its problems while it was evolving, I'm sure HTML5 will go through similar issues. "These Flash ads are slowing my webpage down"... get ready for our webpage down now. Flash Intros!!! Alright, maybe not HTML5 intro's.
I'm sure when new features come out, designers and developers will be pushing the technology beyond the limit of what current hardware can handle...and people will be complaining the same way they do about Flash now. In the future, we'll have 'click-to-HTML5" and it'll just default back to HTML4 or even CSS1....
- Flash was already dead only Jobs noticed it before others did.raf
- goddamit. Missing words, I sound retarded.fyoucher1
- No, it's cool I largely agree, mate.mikotondria3

it still has use in some kinds of application but it has hit its popularity peak

Flash definitely allowed us to create robust interfaces and to be more consistent with design, but it wasn't good for information sharing (not seo friendly, could not be saved locally, could not view source to share code, etc.). I think it's time is nearly over.
the main reasons to use Flash I think were:
1) typography
2) video, audio
3) bitmap scaling
4) 3D, animationbut now that web fonts are becoming more and more popular (Typekit, etc.), the popularity of the iPad/iPhone have continued to influence web video/audio (slowly killing FLV specifically), JS animation has been getting better and better, and that images can now natively scale in browsers, there's not much left for Flash to take the lead in. I believe jQuery is also helping kill Flash by making it easier to build cross-browser websites consistently.
Apple + jQuery + Typekit have all helped hasten the decline of Flash. it was fun while it lasted... :(
- This is a good assessment. jQuery was a big factor because it made JS much easier for designers.ukit2
- Type rendered like dogshit with Flash.aes
- Not at the time most peope didn't have font-smoothing, and there was no webfont.mikotondria3

I actualy agree with @Nicolasdesle. Flash allowed better digital experience then anything I've seen so far in HTML5.
I am a creative not a coder so I don't really care but isn't it going to be a nightmare again to get your HTML5 interface work on every generations of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, IE, not to mention the slight differences on Windows and Mac OS ? and that's just desktop...

ok, who killed who?!?
How many times did I have to kill my browser process due to some badly coded flash ad slowing everything down while I was browsing the web when I should have been working...
How many brain cells did I waste waiting for some stupid flash intros? How many beers did I wish I had drunk instead of staying late at work debugging some actionscript crap code from other developers?
