Has anyone here designed and then hired someone to install wall decals .. specifically type.
I'm concerned I don't know enough about it .. are there higher quality materials I should look at using? How do they go about installing them? Do I need to be there to stand over their shoulder and say about the tracking/leading?
I would ask them directly but I don't have the contact info just yet.

Source: 3M Vinyl
Installation: provide sign shop your type layout as vector art, outlines converted. They will then cut and print out, install the type like a decal to your wall, object, etc...
A very simple and inexpensive procedure that your local sign shop should be capable of.

- and is it very difficult to remove once it's on?_salisae_
- It should peel right off assuming there were no issues with the wall or finish underneath,ETM
- a hotel charged us $1000 after we ripped vinyls down and destroyed their paint. I still blame the hotel for bad primermonospaced

Can you specify a PMS color usually?

I have even done some smaller installs myself. If it's just type and not a full wrap, it especially easy.

go into a local sign co.
you can order promo or calendar vinyls - varying life, from 1-7 years outdoor.they'll have either 3M or avery charts - getting vinyl in PMS colors is very expensive.
when you send in the file, it'll be cut as the vector - then the excess is peeled away and transition (pre-mask) tape is applied. the decal has wax paper on the adhesive side which, when pulled off - the vinyl stays in place via the pre mask.
a lot of sign shops run their plotters from flexi-sign, not illustrator, but if you supply a eps it translates fine.
also, most vinyl rolls come in 18" / 30"/ 36" / 48" - whatever size your decal is, set it with about an inch of that, as often the pinch-rollers need a half inch on either side to adjust for tracking.
i cut a lot of my own vinyl, 48" smart-mark - it's a pretty simple process - but can take a few tries if your a novice - so perhaps ask for a few pieces of scrap to practice with. (they'll have tons)here's a pic of a process shot we did a little while ago - might help to see the application technique?
although this one is a full color printed decal, not a solid vinyl one, but the application is the same.hope that helps.

I do these often, and on a large scale, for events. I found a media company here in NYC (with affiliate vendors across the country) that came with tons of vinyl samples that I could choose from. I have created custom-die type 5 feet tall to transparent clings on glass. You don't have to know a ton, specifically, you just have to have a vendor who does.
- They would provide the labor for installing. It costs big $, but the vinyls are cheap.monospaced

done this a few times with the sign company here in nyc.

also - if you need it to match a pms - ask for it digitally printed and then die cut. but you'll need it to sit flat for 24-36 hrs for the ink to dry, so that the edges to curl after application....

thank you all for your input!
i am going to move forward with digitally printed pms 3m vinyl decals. i just need to measure the walls and do some math to figure out the correct point size for the type.
cheers all!!
