anti windows people generally haven't used a recent version of windows...
    and vice versa.
both are good at different things - both lack things as well.
its a tool. do good work.

    • I use Mac for work and productivity.
Win for downloading sketchy files, use softwares not on mac and watch porn. I could careless if my Win computer catches virus and burst in flame.

You mean Windows v OSX don't you.

Windows computers and OSX computers are both PCs. It stands for Personal Computer you see.

    Build your own personal computer.
    go here

    begin winning.

    • No CS for Linux. :)Continuity
    • Opensource - Gimp, Blender, etc...twokids

    • lol @ gimp, as if that were some CS alternativemonospaced
    • Gimp is barely one notch up from MS Paint.Continuity

I must admit I had to install an app for OSX that allowed me to 'snap' windows to the left and right, like Windows 7.

    • yeah thats another shit osX feature - maximised wondows never maximise. and hiding background windows - bollocksfadein11
    • get this: http://totalfinder.b… - it's awesomezarkonite
    • There's an app called RightZoom. It turns the green button into a full-maximize button. Very lite app.CanHasQBN

What did they use over at Starfish, rmstice?

    • Macs! +my laptop >> stalker ;)rmstice
    • actually, I know you, we were in class together for years!monospaced

Yes, building your own is a real possibility. You can build yourself an amazingly cheap, amazingly fast machine and get open source software. Cost you less than a $1000 and you can do everything that a Mac with CS# does....

Getting a Mac is like joining a club. Nice machine, but you pay a hefty price to be in that club. Easily twice or more what building it yourself will cost, and it doesn't do it any better. People in that club will look at you funny not respect you and maybe not hire you if you say you do your designwork with Gimp on a Linux machine you built by yourself. Maybe in Europe, but not here.

Plus, I cannot believe we are talking about this still....2012

    • The price is rightly justified when you consider everything. That "expensive club" excuse doesn't really hold anymore.monospaced
    • why not? I work on a mac and it cost $3000 + for a laptop and a monitor. Nice stuff, but expensive.....twokids
    • better hardware, better os, better design, better software included, better display, better connections, all built-inmonospaced
    • expensive, but you get better stuffmonospaced
    • same hardware dude, it's an LG screen with intel insides, etc.zarkonite

Consider this, do you want the thing to just work? or do you want to maintain and manage every aspect of your system? How would you class yourself? power user? regular user?

It basically comes down to (forgetting money) how you feel about the interaction of the system. I know so many OSX users that despise the windows OS because, in the end, they haven't properly maintained the system.

These words actually came out of a friend of mines mouth: 'this PC is like driving a tank' to which I responded, 'fuck yeah it is, if you know how to drive a tank'. Her PC was slower than a week in jail and hadden't been cleaned in about 4 years.

Also I remember reading about how Apple will be using a certain type of screw on their boxes that, in order to open, require a screw driver that costs ~£300 and to get one you have to be a certified apple technician or something ridiculous. Surely its your right as a consumer to have the right to take apart what you buy? I'm just talking here and cant be arsed digging out the links, but this sort of lock in is something that apple are trying to do across the board (again cite some links, app store, blah blah blah). Safari, for example, has a crazy amount of security to idiot proof the user.

But I am not disrespecting the OS, in fact, the OSX terminal is fucking awesome, command line for the win. The OSX is based on Unix (or linux, watever), and is fucking robust.

    • so much more to say but its lunch and I'm hungryStugoo
    • when you say "boxes" do you mean the Pro line? they won't be using those screws, evermonospaced
    • I'd like to note that, I own pc laptop, pc desktop, mpb & worked on an imac for 2 yearsStugoo

I got started on Mac, and I bought my first Adobe licenses for Mac machines. So, unless I want to suck up enormous licensing costs to switch to PC, I'm kind of stuck with Mac.

Which is OK, since I really like them.

And they make a nice impression on clients. Make you look top drawer. Which, believe it or not, is not to be underrated.

  • twokids0

exactly - it is about image. that is what mac is. you can do good design on a mac or pc or linux....but your client wants to see you whip out a shiny $2000 macbook pro to show work on. If you take out a windows machine you will immediately be suspect. Your work better be damn good!

    • it's not just about image and you know itmonospaced
    • hahahahahahahahah

    • are you telling me that you cannot create a design with Photoshop for Windows? Same program, same funtionality?twokids

Thanks everyone-whether you tried to take a stab at myself or reply with personal experiences, appreciate the debate nonetheless. Overall happy to hear there's not much difference-aside from nostalgia.

You can Cmd + W or Cmd + Q to close or quit any window on a mac, BUT these wont work for all the applications on a PC.

I have a mac at home but work on a PC at the office....I'm faster and it's all easier for me to work on a mac thanks to all the shortcuts.

PCs are good for graphic performance, gaming and such...
Mac is way better for designing.

    • you just dont know PC shortcutsfadein11
    • oops should have said windowsfadein11
    • lol, probably :PMaaku
    • what are those shortcuts you're missing exactly?zarkonite

    Monospaced:

Are you saying that if someone paid you twice your normal rate to work in their shop on a Windows machine with the latest CS# - you wouldn't do it?

    • no of course he wouldn't - hipsterfadein11
    • I never said that, asshole. I do get paid to use the newest CS on both a PC and Mac. Fucking read, dick.monospaced
  • vaxorcist0

    Hackintosh! Best of both worlds!

Well, except for a few quirks, like sound, but sound works with a USB sound card stick I got for $3.50

Honestly, for me it's about the software, not the OS... and Windows 7 is much better than Vista/XP/whatever....

Who cares really? I'd work on either, but I have to run more anti-spyware crap on Winblows... my trick on Winblows is to setup multiple users, one with almost no permissions, only that user account is used to surf the web....

    • on Winblows,I miss the UNIX command-line, Cygwin is usable, but not as nice...vaxorcist
  • twokids0

yes yes yes yes thank you Vaxorcist!!!!!

    It's about the software!!!

I don't care whether I am using Photoshop on Mac or Window or BeOS....I care about the software that enables me to create things.

Now I could have a major issue if someone said I had to use Corel Paint instead of Photoshop.....that would matter.

    • funny, I find that CS has better window management on windows... the tabs just work better.zarkonite
  • ernexbcn0

Use whatever you feel more comfortable with. In my case it's OS X.

  • monospaced0

That's the thing, twokids, you're 100% correct that it's about the software! I use both a Mac and a PC, simultaneously and together, all day long every day. I have them connected through the network and via other cables all day, and they even share a keyboard and mouse.

So, like you said, based on software, the Mac still wins. Mac OS provides so many useful usability features that make workflow so much easier. I know you were talking about Adobe software and such, but I can't help bring in the OS. Adobe software is the same across platform, but it's OS X that is truly the difference-maker here. More key commands in the finder, quickview, expose, spaces, automation, scripts, the far superior real-time searching, smart folders, smart searches, consistent windows. I think Apple wins here.

    • true... I use both all day long too... slightly prefer mac keycodes, but slightly prefer some winblows stuff too...vaxorcist

Windows and Macs may be able to run the same design software and browsers and music players and such, but those things aren't in isolation. The OS and its GUI/UX matter. The things you have to do to protect your privacy matter. The ease of buying it in the first place matters too. I sure as hell don't want to deal with making sure my sound card is compatible with my motherboard, upgrading various processors to find they don't work with my software, or buying software that won't run because I have a slightly different version of the OS.

I've been strictly Mac for about 5 years now (not that I'm an Apple slave, I have an Android phone) but every couple of months I have to help someone on a Windows machine do something and it just reaffirms my choice.

    • as you say strictly mac for 5 years so you haven't used windows 7 so cannot comment reallyfadein11
    • I know I find my mom's Win7 machine irritating on many levels. And buying it was no picnic.i_monk
  • vaxorcist0

one slight winblows advantage for me....

Adobe stuff seems to run on older versions of winblows more than older versions of MacOS.... possibly because winblows updates less frequently.... but I have an older Mac 10.5 machine, don't want to update OS for various reasons (old software won't work on new os, long story) but I can't install new Adobe LR4 on it... argh!

... that said, updating MacOS 10.x to 10.x+1 isn't as crazy as updating winblows XP to winblows Vista or whatever....

but of course, you can just go get a cheap winblows machine... why update all that software when you can just spend a few hundred and have a new machine(!)

  • twokids0

the one thing about Mac that I have noticed is that it is a lot more stable. I reboot far less often than I do with Windows. Less and 1/4 the amount. That is a factor.

    • anyone here remember MacOS 7.5 and the constant reboots?vaxorcist
    • i remember os 8-9.2.2 were a bit unstable.. especially with Audioautoflavour
    • ya seriously, anyone who went through the 90s on mac has got to have developed twitches.zarkonite
