Yes, building your own is a real possibility. You can build yourself an amazingly cheap, amazingly fast machine and get open source software. Cost you less than a $1000 and you can do everything that a Mac with CS# does....
Getting a Mac is like joining a club. Nice machine, but you pay a hefty price to be in that club. Easily twice or more what building it yourself will cost, and it doesn't do it any better. People in that club will look at you funny not respect you and maybe not hire you if you say you do your designwork with Gimp on a Linux machine you built by yourself. Maybe in Europe, but not here.
Plus, I cannot believe we are talking about this still....2012
