Europe by Train?

I am sure that many of you have traveled across Europe by train, so I've got a few questions.
My fiance and I are slightly second guessing a honeymoon in St. Lucia, in which we are also planning on getting married there by ourselves.
I started thinking of how we've wanted to see more of Europe at some point and thought about a train trip.
Any suggestions? Must-see destinations? Travel tips? Best places to start and to stay in the most?

Moving to Europe, I thought it'd be a lot easier to pick up and travel by train... and it can be if you have a lot of money. My thought, is book in advance, or figure ways to get cheap fairs (student, senior, group).
As far as places to see, I've loved Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris... the normal places.
I'd try and find a route to Salzburg, I've never been, but looks amazing!
- salzburg is awesome, plus 2 hour train ride to innsbruck...which is also fantastic.lvl_13

Get an interrail ticket! http://www.interrailnet.com/
2 years ago I traveled from Amsterdam - Brussels - Lille - Barcelona - Madrid - Granada - Madrid - Lisbon - Porto
Great fun! But beware that some of the busier trains need to be prebooked! Can cost €20-30 extra sometimes.

rough,
Did you have your hotels all lined up ahead of time? We'd definitely not want to stay in a hostel or anything. Did you also travel with a backpack instead of typical luggage?

I always go with a travel agent. Depends on what cities you are visiting. Last one I used was http://www.italyvacations.com/ Submitted a travel itinerary and then got hooked up by phone with an agent. She was very helpful and customized the trip how i wanted. It was all done online and was able to print boarding passes at kiosks through the trip. This is only Italy though, sure others can suggest different sites for different destinations.
- italy is great for trains! especially the eurostar trains! comfy!rough

mg33,
I had all my hotels prebooked, got some good deals that way. Had to take a night train one time which wasn't pleasant but it was the only way. I had a big backpack and the missus had a wheelie suitcase, easier for dragging on trains.
Check out hotels.com, venere.com, lastminute.com for deals!
Where are you thinking of going?

Thinking of starting in Italy, which would hopefully meet our wish of getting married on the Amalfi Coast (something we originally thought of when we got engaged).
We'd want to go to also go to southern France, Alps, Paris (been there before for a week), Switzerland, Austria, maybe into Scandanavia.
- nice! there's a nice train from milan to innsbruck!rough

good idea is to pinpoint where you want to go and then check the train timetables to make sure there's a connection and the times are suitable!

oh yea, myself and herself have used interrail a few times over the last few years - it used to be for students but they made it available to everyone.
depending on were you are going and for how long there are plenty of good things to know about interrail such as how to use night trains for extended coverage on your day allowance.
off the top of my head, my favourite train trip was from Sarajevo to Mostar.
