Well, thanks to those who can read and answer a question within specification... Thanks also to those injecting humor. Not particularly helpful, but a couple made me grin.
Still largely at square one, but this was a long shot anyway.

As far as I know, AT&T doesn't "make" you have a data plan for a smart phone. If you want to get a subsidized phone, then you need a contract with a plan. Just get phone and texts and get a used iPhone. Use WiFi when you want to access the internet.
Get an iphone. Period. Easy as shit to work with for texting, especially with Siri when you're driving (Siri is shit for anything else).
They have tons of deals for older iPhones or just get a used one without a contract. Hell, I have an older 3GS that I'm not using that I'll sell to you for $100.

- not really, the functionality is 99% the same. I had an iPhone previously. It's not always about being cool.panacea

I have the 4s, my first iPhone, but I wouldnt suggest it, especially if you like texting. It has the absolute worst keyboard ive ever used in my life. It's awful.
It does have the voice input stuff, but it doesnt work sometimes, and often messes up words, which means you have to go back to the keyboard anyway.

honestly if you're not getting a smart phone there is no reason to have a contract. They are a fucking rip off compared to a lot of the prepaid plans out now (not prepaid from the big companies, but companies like net10).
With my current usage (~100 minutes + ~300-500 texts a month) I currently only pay on average $15 a month with my net10 phone. Compare that with my old verizon plan in which I was spending upwards of $60 a month. Also, It's nice to not be on a contract.

Question... are you staying with AT&T for any specific reason?
Like, is it the only network that works in your house?I had AT&T, then moved... and.... argh....Oddly enough, AT&T was the only network that DIDN'T work in my old house, so I switched.... and AT&T seemed dedicated to ruining my life when I told them why.... assholes deserve to die painfully....
AT&T costs $$$$, and if you want unlimited data, you can get it from Virgin Mobile/Sprint or T-Mobil for less than you think.... and an android phone on those networks doesn't cost that much...
I've got an Android phone on Virgin Mobile (runs on Sprint) for $44 / month, unlimited data, 1200 minutes, unlimited text, no AT&T hassles....

"I am not looking for a true smartphone. Why? Because I don't plan to use data on my phone and AT&T will make me pay for a data plan with a smartphone."
- Why not? It's great.
Don't be such a ludditeanimatedgif - because AT&T is an extortionist racket that charges you random shit if you try to switch! they are EVIL MOTHERFUCKERSvaxorcist
- Luddite? Seriously? Cheapskate maybe. I just don't feel like paying $100 a month like we do for my wife's plan.ArtOrDie
