g-technology, lacie, mercury elite?

cheap alternative.
get a nas adapter and plug the drive in another room.

owc storage seams to be a good solution, but then you have to find a good internal h d

SSD FTW.
A worthwhile investment!I've had numberous internal and external drives fail on me in the past few years so opted for a SSD. Best move I ever made!

I'm all for quiet, but I once had a LaCie die on me, overheating due to the fan being, uh... quiet and probably not strong enough....

i can't hear any of my hd's - and i've got 6 (different brands)

stay away from lacie if you like your data. love my seagate 3tb firewire800. good stuff.
- i've had 5 lacie's and they've never died. i've had 3 seagates and they've all died.doesnotexist
- wow, really? hmm. there's always divergences from the "norm" i guess.jaylarson

hmm, well... my Lacie had a Seagate inside. there goes that theorie...

one crazy idea... some LaCie drives are designed more to look good than to let air flow through, and/or have a quiet fan rather than an effective one....
maybe putting some spacers under the LaCie would do good my old LaCie overheated one weekend I came back to work and it was running, very hot.... but stuck in a stack of drives of various brands, none of the other ones had any problem.... could be defective fan of course too....

SSD
Worth every penny, going from 89Mb/Sec, to 500Mb/Sec is like night and day.

Once you go SSD you never go back...but I also have one of these for backups (and like it a lot):

SSD is a complete waste of money as a backup drive.

Get a NAS and store it in a closet away from you. Noise problem solved.
