I have 3 different aluminum cases 1st one has open sides with the back solid 2nd has cut-outs on the back 3rd is a bumper . All of them impede the reception to the point of dropped calls and burns the battery fast

I bought for £2 a not overly ugly one.
It cover the edges and the back. No aluminium. Any debris it gets between the case and your phone will scratch the fuck out of it...
This one is rubberised PVC I think. It is thin, light and the design is as little intrusive as an ugly case can be. I would go naked but I use my mobile at the gym and the chances of it falling of or being hit are quite high.

Aluminium. English, motherfucker, can you spell it? ;)
- Both spellings are correct actually. He spelled it the US way.fyoucher1

does that even do anything?
I don't have an iPhone but on my new iPod touch I got a sonix snap slim case and a masque screen protector and it's still nice and sexy

Again, this is an accessory as tasteless as a ground effects kit. No function.

- Right, no case would be nice, but paying for a replacement would not beformed

In other words, allow your testes to drop and carry your iPhone without any add-ons. Like Paul Newman.

I wanted a simple black case (NOT some anodized crap, that's just the image I could easily find).
I don't know if it protects a lot or not. From what I understand, it is the impact on the edge that kills the phone (and breaks the glass).
Most cases look ugly, imho, like big hunks of rubber/plastic (with the exception of those Grove that look interesting, but a little too much for my taste)

- Why am I reminded of those 1970s cars with the exterior faux-wood panelling?Continuity

I thought you were smart.
Rubber absorbs impact. Aluminum transfers it. (Even the when the phone is hit on its edge.)

And no, I don't know if it works or not, one of the questions. I just hate the idea of completely covering a nice piece of design. All the big, plastic/rubber cases look cheap (imho) and more or less defeat the purpose of paying for a nice looking phone. But that's just me, clearly.

I bough that Element Vapor 4 case when they put them on sale for $75 because they redesigned it.
I liked it at first and got a lot of complements on it. Then I started to notice a bunch of design flaws. Like the bottom charging port only accepts the white thin apple charger cord. No big deal until you go on a road trip and only have an after market Belkin charger in your car. The headphone plug only accepts the really thin plug so using it in an Auxiliary plug jack is usually to fat to fit. The case was also to fat to fit in my Pro Case dashboard cradle or dock in any of my Apple ipod charging dock or Bose nightstand unit.
I picked up a generic thin black case at the UPS store for $7 and although I dont think it would protect it if I dropped it on a hard surface it makes the iphone more usable and enjoyable.

Exactly, some people think that if you put another hard surface on the edge of the phone you are fine, but another hard layer only prevents from scratches (just like an sticker would do). If it lands on the edge, the shock will transmit to the phone.
A silicone/ rubber case protects from both, scratches and absorbs impact, this is a no brainer, hard cases are for decoration not protection, and that's fine as long as that's what you want to do.
Now, I'm not saying you should go and spend over $50 on something so over-the-top-ridiculous like this:
Which I'm sure does it's job, but looks horrid.
You can unbranded slim, flat black silicone/ rubber cases that don't really make your phone all bulky.
