Any other young designers out there feel like everything's been done?
You know you have your own style and opinions, but there's so much good stuff out there already, and soooooooo much crap, you're not sure there's any point in trying to compete?

Break barriers, there's always something that hasn't been done.

I agree. Just give up now.

Remind yourself that not everyone is as disillusioned as yourself and you can reuse most of the ideas that have been done already.

I know exactly what you mean. We all have very similar tools, and goals, and the design of what we do must meet fairly exactly criteria that are common to what we all do.
My advice would be to just not worry about it - continue honing the craft, perfecting your sense of color, of space, improving your copywriting, sense of appreciation of typography, of line, of proportion, of taste.
Looking back 10 years, it's not the wild and wonderful new ideas that have flourished - although at the time they're what got the attention. It's the basics of design and layout and taste and usability, the ability to communicate ideas as clearly as possible, that have developed. Sure, there's a ton of great stuff out there, some of it is people who haven't been around long who are humiliatingly talented - good luck, them - they'll need more than talent to still be putting out good work in 5 years, most good work is people who just keep their nose down and study and experiment and who've learned the skills of self-improvement by doing, doing, doing, over and over, never being entirely satisfied with what they've done, often barely even being able to look the work in the eye after spending months on it, and the client loving it. If you do all these things, and keep at it, lady luck might shine on you and you'll discover something truly original or unique, that'll seem to happen all by itself; it won't, of course, it's just the result of you constantly redesigning and honing the process of producing good work. We are what we constantly do.

That's loser talk.
I'm sure at all any given time, in almost any industry it feels like that. But you can bet the individuals who come up with original ideas dont ever think like that.

Rather than something completely new and innovating
why don't you improve upon something good that has stood against time.

This is a narrow minded attitude in a universe of endless possibilities. A competition? - Do it for your own satisfaction, why be afraid to try - nothing is a failure if you learn from it, how else will you discover what you're made of and evolve.
My advice is to focus and open your mind to see everything with fresh eyes, listen to your intuition, be aware of the purpose in your actions, meditate on tomorrow, anticipate the direction of thoughts and life and the innovative ideas will naturally come.

Everything has been done until someone does something new.

I can easily think of new things to do but they're hard. People tend to do short term practical things and much of the feasible shit with today's technology has been explored.
