I've got a Dell laptop 2.8GHZ DUO. with 4 gig of ram.
i've got a ton of stuff open. 81 process. even firefox is eating up 600 MB. It's running the same speed now as it does with nothing open. Not slow at all.I use avast antivirus on it's lowest security setting, I found the other brands to be fairly heavy.
And... ^^^^ what ETM said.

yeh, get like a Ram-freeing program too - if you notice it's low (because of Adobe & FF memory leaks), click it and it'll free up yr shit. SSD for your media files and big work files. Keep it all tightly defragged. msconfig or a friendlier config/tune-up program.
- ‘SSD for your media files and big work files.’ I'm fairly sure discs are better for these categories of files...detritus

id say check out the startup stuff. see what u can cut out and manually do if u so choose. the firefox is huge and adding ie to it doesnt help. my main browser is opera and uses about 350 mb to run my email+bot torrents and surfing and some other varioius stuff. 350 is high to me but i dont mind with my ram (6gb). i dont know any non login image websites to post process screenshots too. But right now i have 55 processes running at around 2.93gb including (larger loads) 800mb photoshop, 80 adobe reader, 80 tea timer, 340 opera, 48 thx audio, 36 windows media, rest smaller loads. CPU usage is little like 1-10percent running at 3.8 quad decent heat. Think u just need faster processing power/ram and neat to operate in hardware standards while cleaning up ram eating garbage not in use.

93 processes is ridiculous.
Go to start > run > and type 'msconfig'
Go to the start up tab and uncheck a lot of that shit.
If have 3 boxes checked fyi. Adobe stuff and my graphics drivers. You could probably uncheck them all and be fine, but it might cause problems. Stuff like printing drivers and adobe authentication (called service manager iirc).
Just uncheck them all then go through them again and tick the important ones. Restart your machine and check all is ok, if something doesn't work, go back into the startup tab and tick the appropriate box.
You could also check out the services tab in msconfig, but I wouldn't bother for now, you can mess stuff up with that if your not careful.

But also having many adobe apps open can slow down decent machines depending on how big the projects in those applications are.
Just having a big PS and after effrcts file can slow down shizz.

you had open -
dreamweaver
fireworks
photoshop
flash
firefox
internet explorer
illustrator
itunes
adobe readerIm not surprised your computer was slow. surely you dont all of those programs open at once. but still 93 is excessive, get trimming those start up programs.
and yes itunes is fucking shit on windows. Its resource hog, i'd use something else if speed is imperative. Winamp pro is nice a small resource wise. if you want to go hardcore on speedy music program use foobar.
