I dropped my iPhone 3GS the other day and a couple days later it started acting up. Would freeze after the second time it was locked and took forever to reboot, took it to the "geniuses" and they took it in the back and looked at it, said they couldn't do anything (I replaced the screen myself months ago) because it was out of warranty, I had opened it and it had 3rd party parts in it. Didn't realize until after I left, it was now stuck on the Apple screen with spinning wheel. I don't know what they did, but seemed like the bricked the fucker. Anyway, itunes could see it and all, I went through every procedure I could find online, restored to a backup, DFU mode, restored doing a clean wipe, everything. Nothing helped.
So I opened it up, unhooked cable 1 and 2, lifted the lock on cable 3, blew out the dust, put the cables back, closed it up and it works like brand new. I never saw any mention of that anywhere on the web, so thought I'd throw it up here in case anybody else can use the info.

The only issue: Opening it up voids the warranty.
- too late for that, i replaced the busted screen myself months ago. cost 7 bucks.johnny_wobble
- totally - after it was opened the first time, I'd absolutely try that.bulletfactory

Thanks for the tip. I'd only have the nerve if like you I thought it was dead and it was the last hope.
- same, handy to know though if ever on the last straw.********

my 3gs is on its last legs, has bricked once, restored it on itunes, but is still playing up, freezes, slow response on the touch everynow and again... camera wont even open, and if you try too it will freeze out even if you close the camera and go back to the main screen. annoying but not so bothered as i am waiting for the iphone 5 and am on a rolling one month contract. just bugs the crap out of me
- don't know if it was the cables or dust fucking mine up. might be worth opening and blowing out any dust bunnies.johnny_wobble
- probably the cables though.johnny_wobble

I thought my 3G had died the other week.
Battery wasnt flat yet it was dead to the world. Wouldn't startup/turn on or anything.
It eventually came back to life after sitting untouched for about hald an hour after i'd been pressing the buttons trying to start it.I was almost dissapointed when it did startup though as i've been looking for an excuse to get a 4 haha.

if you were a semi attractive girl all you have to do is go into your mobile provider store and make up a bs story

I tought it was about putting your iPhone in the freezer to freeze it up so it can re-work afterward.
