If anything just put your budget into that 8gb ram and an i7.
You should store and edit your video files from an external drive via firewire (unless you are shooting at an intense resolution like 2k+).
Video card memory isn't too much of big deal, rather aim for the latest on the market - it's more about the chipset.
Probably a tech head here that will give a ten times better response than this though!
- hmm ok, I'd have thought vid memory was more important. good to know, thanksProjectile

I would get one with 4 to 6GB of RAM and ensure the hard drive has at least 7200rpm. The 5400rpm drives are too slow to write video while rendering.
- hmmm now an SSD would really make a difference there if I can squeeze one into the budgetProjectile
- True, but I'd go for more space over ss as video files can be huge.spot13
- true, but I can always carry a few portable externals no?Projectile
- if you editing video, everytime you plugin a drive you need to remap it. I always edit locally on a laptop.spot13

I'd say a MBP with shitloads of ram, but that's well over your budget.
SO... get cheap-oh dell and tune it up buying components separately (16GB or ram for a pc cost nothing).something you might want to look into is battery life, specially if you are on the move.
anyway - bear in mind that editing video with only one screen (and a laptop one) is a proper bitch.

What are you using to edit video, Premiere?
- yeah. Would like to start playing with AE as well. Which is worse?Projectile
