Long time lurker, first time contributor...trying to build an XML based 'slideshow' (AS2 preferably) in flash that can play .flv files as slides in addition to standard .jpg's. I've been trying to follow the slew of google tutorials that i've found online but I keep breaking them. any pointers? thanks.

I would recommend trying to do it in AS3 if you can, especially if you are looking to work off an existing template. There is a slight learning curve working with AS3, but afterwards you will never want to go back to AS2. The way XML is handled in AS3 is much easier.

I'll half-second what Aa77 says here. AS3 is not a casual thing to learn. It's a programmer ad developer's programming language and it's NOT to be taken lightly. However. one of the the things AS3 does better than AS2 is how it handles XML.
