The opportunistic looting has gotten completely ridiculous now (the barber shop, other small privately owned shops, etc). That said, it's no mystery as to why this powder keg exploded. Here's a look at some of the original crews who helped get this pressure cooker fired up in the first place:

interesting comment came to me from a friend. All these riots are filled with mixed races robbing the scenes. Yet all the photos they've seen online have only blacks as arrested individuals caught on camera.

I'm half glad i'm not in London, but feel like i'm missing out on some war time camaraderie. For the you guys that are there, has it sparked racial tension? Are there suspicious eyes on the tube? I've been in a discussion with some mates, here's another view from a mate:
Speaking as one who actually works with these young 'chavs' on a daily basis, this is a problem that has been festering for a very long time and all these riots have done is make it evident to a wider population. The government have done nothing to rectify a very serious symptom of a far more sinister disease. Wielding a heavy hand would be like slapping gaffa tape on an already septic wound. In a society where young people are seeing corrupt politicians, media tycoons, bankers and so on, get away with hardly any accountability for their actions, why should the disenfranchised young people of Britain. The student riots were the beginning, and they continue to be disempowered in so many ways that the media do not bother to report on. I'm not saying their behaviour is right or in any way justifiable but they have been failed by a highly inadequate system, and these fat cats need to shape up.
What is lacking unfortunately in these communities is any form of family structure. That's where it begins. It's a vicious cycle of children having children, getting away without accessing education (I work with two 15yr olds who can't read and that is very common), a social service that is completely incapacitated in how they can apply discipline and boundaries around these families and no consistant penal system. The new government have responded by making huge financial cuts to social services and the police force, exacerbating the problem even more. These kids have it very hard, but in a different way. And I say this even though I get called a cunt by them almost every day. They ultimately respond to love, boundaries, education and pedagogic care, but there are simply not enough resources to deal with the enormity of the problem, the result being feral kids. They have no positive references to work towards, so their aspirations are instant material gratification.

Bored kids, school holidays, the youth centres closing down, corruption in the banks, media, police force. Huge debt, bombarded with ads all day telling them the NEED iphones, shoes, diesel jeans, but no way to get jobs.
Just wish they weren't so fucken clueless about it all
