Camera Lens Question

I have this lens - Tamron 17-50 f2.8.
I noticed two days ago that the end of the lens has gotten loose - not the glass part, but the plastic ring that goes around the lens that the hood can attach to. The glass of the lens DOES NOT MOVE, but when I move the camera around it the ring does move, especially if the hood is attached.
Anyone ever had this happen on a lens? I think it's slightly broken, but not affecting operation at all.

quick google search found discussion and mention of 3 small screws to tighten.

filter ring only? annoying, and I'd fix it soon with the screws mentioned by johnny_wobble, as it may get worse.... or it may simply be annoying and never matter.... but I don't like things like this....
if you want to do a lens test, get a tripod, and a sharply printed text-heavy magazine.... tear out a magazine page, tape it on the wall sideways, highlight a few words all on one line of text, put camera on tripod, aim camera/tripod at 45 degree angle to the wall, focus on the highlighted words, zoom in, see if your actual shot is focussed slightly before or after the highlighted words.... if so, get your lens re-calibrated/serviced.... with some cameras you can tweek focus calibration in the camera, but not most....

How long have you owned it?
I think this is a known issue with some copies of this lens. That said, owners still seem to love it and I'm thinking this might be my next lens purchase.

- it is a fantastic lens and totally worth the $450 I spent on it.mg33
- And thanks for looking this up and the link.mg33

Thanks for the responses. I've had this lens for a couple of years. Used it plenty in Ireland recently and even when using at home within the last couple of weeks I don't recall it doing that. Only noticed it a couple of days ago.
- Is it still under warranty? send it in for a check up and calibration.ok_not_ok

I want this one to replace my 18-55 kit

I'd drop it off at Calumet/Samy's for servicing. $35 could have it fixed in a week.

Like i said, this lens is excellent, and was what I started with when I got my D90. Lots of people seem to like it. I've got it, and a 50mm f1.8, and an old Sigma 70 - 210 that my stepdad gave me.
Not to stray too far from this conversation, but I'm planning to buy a new telephoto/zoomlens before our trip to Iceland in August, and I am looking at two different Tamron lenses:
Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8
http://www.tamron.com/en/photole…or
Tamron SP 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di VC USD
http://www.tamron.com/en/photole…Hard decision. Second one is smaller, longer zoom range, vibration control. First one is shorter zoom range, but is also f2.8. Also bigger, heavier, might be a pain to travel with.
Our other option is to not buy any new lenses at all and get my fiance a better digital point and shoot.
Any opinions here?
- well, scratch the fiance's new camera off the list.johnny_wobble
- i'm looking at that 70–300 for my nikon. seems great lens valuejaylarson

I love my old 80-200 F2.8 Nikon AF-D.... old-school, push-pull lens, no built-in AF, but your D90 has a motor... Note that there are variations of this lens, many people avoid the push-pull 80-200 F2.8 because the old non-D AF lens focusses really slowly, but the AF-D version focusses pretty fast.... and I like the push-pull for event jobs...
You can get them from KEH for about $500-$600 the optics in mine are wonderful.... make sure it's the D version, as the "non-D" version has slow AF

Got it fixed. Simple removal of the ring over the lens, and the screws just needed to be tightened up. All good now!

Quick question...
I am going to NY this week and wanted to take a wide angle, I can go with a 10-20mm or a 16-35mm. Which one would you recommend?
Danke!
- vaxorcist0
what camera do you have?
how wide do you need?if you have a APS-C Canon or DX Nikon, the 16-35 isn't that wide....
if you have a full-frame DSLR the 10-20 will probably either vignette or not fit.

The Canon EF-S 10-22 will NOT WORK on your 5D, it will smash the mirror....
The Canon 16-35 will work, and will be wide on your 5D.....
a third party 10-20 may work on your 5D, it will be insanely wide and may vignette, where the corners turn black....
- I have this one for my 5D mkII http://www.amazon.co…CyBrainX

That's what I was afraid of... I guess the 16-35mm would be fine :)
Thanks vax!

16-35 is definitely enough for architecture, group photos and macro shots. f2.8 is pretty good too.
