I have just been laid off from my job.
I have about 15k to my name.
I'm young enough, that I thought maybe I should go to Europe for a few months or something.
Has anyone gone off on a trip alone for little reason?
How much do you think it costs a week?
I'd prefer not to stay on Hostel bunkbeds.

Go for it!
Costs totally depend on where you want to go within Europe... Berlin is rather cheap, London/Paris not...

Do it. If you have no obligations, bloody well go for it. Too hard when you're older.

- harder to do it when you're older? bullshit. more like people that cant save and waste all their money cant do it when they are older.cunticle
- they're older. i know many older folk that travel alot.cunticle
- Definitely impossible when older.
Do it.
Next.ItalianStallion - italianstallion. you must have a small peniscunticle
- Absolutely not impossible when you're older. In fact, it keeps you young.Continuity

I am on exactly that. Been traveing for almost two months. I would reccomend cheap lodging, and no more than a maximum of three countries because transportation is expensive.
- Transport isn't that expensive if you stick to trains between countries.Continuity

Hostels are your best bet for having a bed under you while you sleep on the cheap. Ipad = best travel device. Europe on an extended trip feels like you are staying inn a theme park. Visit at least one or two developing nations that are not historically of a christian denomination.
- hostels make the best sense. unless you are working and travellingcunticle

What do you want to get out of your travelling experience? You just want to take a break, see the work, then go back from whence you came? Or are you looking to travel with the goal of moving country after you've figured out which one best suits you?
If it's the first option, then don't be too cheap with yourself. Yeah, watch the finances, but also splurge on occasion.
If it's the second option, you'd better stick to being as cheap as you can, cos you'll need the safety net, just in case.

I travelled around the world for 14 months on 15k

Never regretted a moment.

Southeast Asia, Viet Nam/Cambodia... could live like a king/queen/both with that much scratch, explore, seek out alternatives to your career, live life; I leave for HCMC in sixty days, won't be looking back over my shoulder when I do... suggest you do the same.
- and eat native - yeah you'll get sick for a bit, but then the anti-bodies will kick in and you'll be fine...********

Dont be one of those assholes that has to tout the price tag of your trip whenever youre done too. Blahblahdid this and this for 5cents a day! No one cares. Your trip is your trip.

If you're not trying to stay at Hostels, you might want to look into subletting or house swapping your living space. I sublet or house swap since I'm traveling pretty much all the time and I've never been disappointed. It saves an incredible amount of money if you're either not paying for the place you're staying or someone else is paying your rent. When I house swap and I'm traveling all over, I pick to swap with a place thats most central to all the places I want to go. It's still a place you can use as your launching spot, fly in an out of, or come back to, or receive packages at. And, you'll have someone to water the plants and collect the mail at your place while you're gone.
- but i also think this option takes a lot of energy. I'm used to it, but it's a bit of coordinating.shellie
- Must be nerve-wracking, though, wondering if the person you're swapping with is trust-worthy.Continuity
- I've always been able to send a family member or friend to meet the people and see the place. All are artists like us.shellie
- I'd say the places are kinda awesome & they'd want theirs to be kept just as nice as mine. in that way swaps are better than subletshellie
- than a sublet because you're in their place and they have the same concerns about their stuff.shellie

mate, if you are wondering if you gotta do it is that most likely you have/need to.
you don't need to spend 15k, but you could, and nothing will happen. it's just money. one of my friends sold his house and travelled around the world for 2 years or so.
i travel/travelled because of work quite a lot, and spent a reasonable amount of money of 'topping up' the travels i had to do.
best luck and give a shout if you come to london... we'll set some QBN drinks...

Do it, go travelling. You'll meet some great people along the way.
I would head to Asia for a totally different vibe... India, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia etc. $2-3k will give you a few months living pretty well and doing everything you need to, if you plan well. Enjoy!

DO IT! You'll never regret it, well, you may when you've got some intestinal entertainment, but otherwise you'll look back on it well
I quit my geek job in 1998 and spent almost all of 1999 traveling in India.... I'm still dying to go back! Met amazing people, artists, and qutie a few adventures....
