Dear Congress, It's No Longer OK To Not Know How The Internet Works
- monospaced0
Can't imagine it'd really take hold. The "internet" started (for the most part) in local pockets around the country. Yeah, the whole www. thing and html and browser standards came about, but the concept was that it would always be free and public. People will not give that up despite government intervention.
Remember dialing-in to a BBS with telnet? If this crap goes through, it would only be a matter of time before private ISPs and new communications networks pop up, just like the good 'ol days. In conclusion, I don't really think this thing could go through because it would piss everyone off, and if it did, it might be a good thing, spurring a new "internet" that people control again.
- You say private ISPs, etc. The thing is the government can slam them as well or would if that happened. FUCKED R wepanacea

there is crack on the internet?

So is this bill developed by Republicans? I'd really like to be sure of that. I can't wait for one of my fiance's relatives to tell me that "Obama wants to control what content you can have on a website and he will shut it down if they don't like what you're saying."
Looks like the Protect IP Act is Democrat sponsored, and the Stop Online Piracy Act is Republican sponsored. From what I'm reading, the latter of the two seems like the more serious one that's being discussed in this thread.

Yeah yeah... even if this shit gets passed people will do exactly as they please. Like in china, where everybody's mom knows how to circumvent their shitty censorship apparatus. Can't wait to laugh in their stupid wrinkly old turd faces.

I feel like this above all things (trampling of human rights in Zuccotti Park, trampling of human rights abroad by American soldiers, ineffective leadership in government, bought votes in Congress) would be the tipping point for revolt. I say that with anyone under 25 specifically in mind.
Some motherfuckers are going to be PISSED if this passes, myself included.

Okay, I just read that TechDirt article.
When was the last time Congress extended their session for anything? I seem to recall in the midst of the '08 economic downturn AND the year of the Iraq bombings, Congress was like, "Eh, we'll be back in about a month."
http://www.techdirt.com/articles…
"...Despite the fact that Congress was supposed to be out of session until the end of January, the Judiciary Committee has just announced plans to come back to continue the markup this coming Wednesday. This is rather unusual and totally unnecessary. But it shows just how desperate Hollywood is to pass this bill as quickly as possible, before the momentum of opposition builds up even further."
Everything is fucked beyond belief in America these days.

mg33,
It's supported by both some people from both parties (and opposed by some from each). They are almost all in the pocket of the Chamber of Commerce, and big entertainment companies after all. Also PIPA and SOPA are basically the same bill.
After all the arguing over big business vs socialism, you'll find the Democrats will happily do the bidding of the big corporations, and the Republicans will happily give the government unlimited power to censor the internet, as long as someone cuts them a check.

There is good coverage of it here:

Congress is considering two well-intentioned but deeply flawed bills, the PROTECT-IP Act and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).
As written, they would betray more than a decade of US policy and advocacy of Internet freedom by establishing a censorship system using the same domain blacklisting technologies pioneered by China and Iran.
- I don't know why people even would call it 'well-intentioned'Gminor
