Since the other thread got derailed...
http://www.techdirt.com/articles…
U.S. Congress is on the verge of passing a bill, the Protect IP Act (PIPA) that will encourage ISPs to block any site suspected of "intellectual property infringement," and require search engines to remove them from their results.
"The bill provides specific liability protection, so that if these providers cut off service to a site under the incorrect belief that it was dedicated to infringing activities, there's no remedy for those sites...."

say... qbn for example.
- ukit0
lol....I doubt QBN would be on their radar. But you can bet The Pirate Bay and other sites that are headquartered offshores will be.
- i don't know, we have some interesting weekly threads with links o plenty to certain "things"prophetone
- fuck that logic. if it's one, it's all of us at risk.dMullins

And how long before this stuff starts getting used for political purposes? 1984 here we come

this is serious stuff but I doubt that my thoughts will make a difference. What should we do? How does one go about helping Google exempt government oversight?
- fresnobob0
"Intellectual property infringement" is such a sketchy term.

anybody provide an abstract for the "legal jargon" impaired?

I agree with sessses, but sadly and disgustingly for some bizarre reason legislations and laws that get passed on the US often filter down to other countries on a worldwide scale.
Any petition we can sign opposed to this?

So what about search companies that don't operate in the U.S.?
This proposed law seems a bit short sighted and lacks an understanding of the lengths people will go to to get what they want on the net.

@ dnoobie
Shorter version: You type www.piratebay.org (or any site like this) into your browser, and you can't access it. Big corps (like Comcast, which is also a content provider since it owns NBC) now have the government sanctioned right to block any site "suspected" of file sharing, and Google will be forced to drop them from their search results.
And regardless of what you think about file sharing..imagine the implications of this.
- wow, that is very ambiguous - big brother could rationalize anything w that - , thanksdnoobie

What's most disgusting is the complete radio silence on this in the media...who are obviously the same people pushing for this bill.
Only the tech industry is standing up against this...if you look at the results it is mostly smaller tech blogs and internet freedom groups and not big sites like Huffington Post or NYT.

Nice knowing you all.- Hey, the world's ending anyway. So it may not matter.ukit

No matter how many laws are passed the collective minds of hackers and nerds will outsmart the small group of ill-advised politicians.
- Yup.mikotondria3
- Agreed – a solution will present itself. This shit is fucking evil though!NONEIS

Anything that has an alternate political view from the govt will be shut down.
You have seen nothing yet.
Want your answers. Look into the eyes.

this will be of interest to those of you talking about this sort of stuff..
it doesn't just begin or end with IP stuff or searching for pirate bay....
http://www.prisonplanet.com/gove…i found this particularly chilling....
can't help but notice that when it's the middle east erupting with demonstrations, it's all 'fantastic...let the good times roll for those decent folks..all they want is democracy!'.....but when it's a western country like Spain...suddenly its all 'shit...can't have our folks watching or learning about that..they might get ideas....'
