goldieboy: "Mono, ask yourself this: Is it really worth the hassle? Would you not rather be out in your spare time, with friends, ladies etc?"
I spend tons of time with my friends, ladies, etc, but I like having a hobby and right now I don't. As a kid I was a tinkerer and I also built a ton of models (cars and planes) and I loved it. I thought having a geeky project like this would be kinda fun and I would also learn a thing or two about computer building. I'm also looking for the simplest build because I don't want a big hassle.
To answer your question: yes, I think it would be worth it in the end because, as much of a fan of Apple as I am, they don't make a fucking "Mac" anymore! They have MacBooks, they have Mac Minis, they have iMacs, and then a HUGE jump to the Mac Pro. Where's the regular fucking Mac that would fit right between the iMac and the Mac Pro? I mean, something with similar specs to an iMac but in a tower. That's what I want to build.
- that "Mac" never existedanimatedgif
- do it. my build thread has a list of cheap components with no issues. do it.johnny_wobble
- that Mac DID exist for several yearsmonospaced
- Yeah, Until Jobs came back Mac had excellent mid-range coverage.Horp
- When there was high end Quadra, there was mid range Centris, and low-end LC. All extensive ranges.Horp
- Thank youmonospaced

hahaha... gotcha! I wasn't being serious.
On a serious note, I wouldn't have the patience, maybe in the winter months but not in the summer time.

"much of a fan of Apple as I am"muahahahahHAHAHAHAH,

I built a hackintosh. Love it. Im running stable OSX 10.6.6
System: GA-X58A-UD3R rev2
CPU: i7-950 3.06ghz
Graphics: EVGA NVIDIA GTX470
SSD-120gb
HD - 1tb
Total cost was about $1000 and its stupid fast- What tutorial did you follow to install OSX? did you update it?GeorgesII
- how much does the SSD help?vaxorcist
- I used this http://www.tonymacx8…err
- The SSD helps a lot!err
- I have not updated the OS. I tried doing 10.6.7 and it blew my install. I keep 2 disc imgs one base install and one with all my apps installed. All my files and such are stored on another drive.err

^shit, thats a nice machine.
6gb ram right? i wish my cpu was triple memory (3 sticks), so i could have 6gb ram rather than 4gb (2x2b)...ill upgrade to 8 one day.
- im running 12gb 3 sticks I can put 12 more cuz i have 3 more slots open :-Perr

"For 600 you could well get closed to a Mac Pro in performance. You can build an i5/i7 machine on that budget easily. "well said mate.
Its a just a question of if you are capable of trouble shooting the problems / willing to invest some time in a hackintosh build.
A sandybridge i5 2500k system will set you back around £600, and thats a killer cpu, plus a very decent graphics card (a radeon 5850 or a gtx 460).
and as a bonus that i5 2500k, is made for overclocking.
- Thign is, there are plenty of guides to help with minor issues, as well as guides that give you problemless builds.********
- Some setups can be built then simply retail installed.********
- Yeh dude I'm of the group if people who thinks it its worth the small amount of trouble shooting. Plus I like the tinkering :)Hombre_Lobo

i've got an old g5 kicking around - could it be used to build a hackintosh? and could a total numpty like me do this, or is it quite a specialised process?
- ********0
hans, it turns out you can.
- err0
Ive seen a few g5 hackintoshes. The ones that look the easiest to do all use a motherboard tray made for a lian li case. look here http://blog.neomajic.com/?page_i…

http://convertit2mac.com/, these guys helped me build a hackintosh ...
running smooth for 3 years now. best part with their method is that you don't have to worry about updates breaking your install
happy reading

- tss..should've gone SSDdetritus
- was supposed to but they were out of them both 60gb and 120gb, but no worry the system is pretty fuckn fastgeorgesIII
- nice man, congrats on getting it running.johnny_wobble
- the DDR is 1600 btw not 1066,
solved the issue laterGeorgesII

Such irony in this thread from apple supporters. Why are you building hackintoshes twurps when apple is amazing. Go buy their shit, overpriced, not upgradable computers since you are so vocal everywhere else telling people how apple does everything right.
Such fucking hypocrites.
- I wish my world was as tiny and neatly polarised as yours. Life would be so very simple.detritus
- it is very simple.. you have douchbags and hypocrites like you and then you have normal people.Boz
- irony? don't see it.johnny_wobble
- can you just be fucking specific for ONCE Boz? You call out Mac fanatics but never back them up with examplesmonospaced
- Jesus titty-fucking christ.ian

btw: the system ended up costing me around €1100,
but it's rock solid,
so far the only down point is the audio card that doesn't seem to want to work,
actually it's my fault because I should do a fresh install to solve it, but I'm too lazy..- Was this cost including a monitor? Seems a bit pricy if it was just the unit.********
- on my hackintosh, I never got the sound card to work, but I got a $5 USB sound card, works finevaxorcist

Very soon. I have a Development release of Lion running on my Dell. Not really impressed though - May be because it's in dev though.
- what's good, what's bad? what do you expect to improve?vaxorcist
- GeorgesII0
@orrinward, the same system with the same specs in the apple store would have cost me €3500, I'm adding another 6gb of ram next week, that about €1000 in the aps store, getting them for 80,
@vaxorcist, what card did you get, I don't want to reinstall everything
- vaxorcist0
I got a VERY cheap USB external sound adapter "card" on ebay... cost $5 or less... I think it was :
- I also have this for an old laptop whose headphones jack went kaboom. Not awful, considering the cost.********
- Not exactly high-end audio output but if you're not an audiophile this is an easy and fast solution.********

Are Hackintoshes a realistic option yet? My MBP is dying a slow ATI Radeon X1600 death and I'm really not thrilled by the prospect of spending another $2000-$2500 on something that will only last 5 years and may contain widespread flaws that Apple arbitrarily decides not to fix.
