I was asked to do packaging design for a sneaker company. They ask me to do the shoebox and maybe a shopping bag.
Never done shoeboxes or shoppingbags.
How much do I charge them?

"not sure yet. i will get details on this project after i give them an estimate."
What in the what what now? To paraphrase monospaced - how on earth do you intend to make a meaningful estimate without knowing the details and scope of the project?
Otherwise you are just saying numbers
- They don't know what to budget.... How much for a house?!? Taj Mahal or shack?vaxorcist

i guess you guys are right.
Those guys are new and they have no idea what they want.
They just keep asking "how much for a shoebox design?"
hmm..

You can educate them. Let them know your process: the time involved in developing concepts/directions, their responsibilities as clients to provide timely content, feedback and decisions, the number of revisions you anticipate, and the hours you think each stage will consume. This process ensures a quality product and leaves nothing to the imagination. Then you can start talking about prices.

Not to mention the box vendor, whether they'll be providing a die for the box form, proofing and what your role is in these areas. If they are asking you, they should have some answers.

How long is a piece of string?
JK. But seriously, get as much info from the client as possible, and then report back here for any advice.

I would hire a designer who has worked on shoe box / bag design. You hire them as your contractor / partner, you learn by working together, you make a little money.

- yeah, but i dont know anyone with shoebox design experience.Lustwaffe

I think one or two of the regular QBNers have done shoebox stuff. I swear I've seen someone posting some cool stuff. If they pop up, get them on board.

tell them what your hourly rate is and how long you think it will take to do the box

"You can educate them"...
You can try that... but right off the bat it sounds like this client doesn't understand Project Management. If they're approaching you asking you to quote money but aren't giving you any scope in writing (meaning they have no project management)... ... run away, friend...
... are they going to pay you for the free education? :)
Project Management exists in all businesses... if you come across a business that's just 'winging it'... ... I've found it best to just move on... and most importantly - DO NOT LET THEM SUCKER YOU into being their Project Manager... ... unless they're willing to pay for that of course. :)
- just trying to help...monospaced
- wasn't being negative toward you, mono... ... just pointing out that he's being asked to design... not project managePonyBoy
