Call an electronic store in your area. Best Buy will take batteries and phones for free.

I tend to keep a couple of generations back in case my current phone fucks up, or if someone from abroad stays with me, so they can have a phone for the time they're here. with credit. (Pay As You Go)

I donate them. This organization will let you print out a pre-paid shipping label so you can just drop them in the mail.

I do keep my most recently retired phone as a backup though.
I always thought it would be cool to keep every phone I ever had and mount them in order in some kind of display to showcase the evolution on technology and my own personal connection to it, but I've lost too many phones for it to be worth it.
