I am trying to edit a smart object in photoshop.
It is a red outline and I want it to be a black outline.
I am getting this message:
Could not update smart object files because the source rectangle is empty
Anyone know a trick to avoid this?

rasterize the layer and then use an effect

I am trying to avoid rasterizing it.

Open up the original file you created in the source program?
You did keep a native version of that work, didn't you?

try converting the smart object inside another smart object and apply a smart filter on it.

Bulletfactory - I am not sure what you mean.
Detritus - I have the original, but I am using the smart object within the PSD as a universal guide (masks, layers, etc) - so when I am using as a guide I need it to be red (on black background) but when I need to actually use the line in the image I need to turn it black.

I was looking through some tutorials on lynda.com when I found out about embedding smart objects inside other smart objects...
Since Smart Objects are effectively embedded Photoshop documents, you can create additional Smart Objects inside a Smart Object, thereby nesting Smart Objects. This can be useful if, for example, you're creating a complex logo that you might want to tweak globally later.

You could try to duplicate it, make the top one bigger so it covers the outline. Then trace the edges and make a mask that hides the red outline.

I can hide the outline in the final version.
I guess I need it to be an outline and I need it to be an embedded smart object or else the point is null.

send it to college

Can't you just add a Color Overlay layer style to it?

or you could just use guides...?

double click the layer to open up the object and make your changes there.
save and close

I've never seen that error message. Can you post your psd?
