Rent in NYC sounds fucking mental. $3.5k a month in that article above for something that isn't on Richard Branson's Necker Island. Jesus.

and rent will only increase in the future.
Space in NYC is finite; our rate of procreation is not.

Your more than fine on 100K.

nyc939 ā I stand by what i said. 'Life'. 'Survival' ā quite strong words.
I'd love to see the average salary of this board, as i'm sure that 100k is quite far above it. Giving more weight to my 'boasting', 'dochebag' and 'fucking cock' comments.
You can do a lot in this city with that salary and it should be quite obvious to anyone with half a brain.
But then what am i saying? Don't move here, you'd hate it.

If you plan to go straight to work and straight home every day... sure fine.
I don't want to be pessimistic but - Gym, sports, recreation, and food are very expensive in NY. If you are into racketball or something, just want to let you know, it is very very expensive.
Even a slice of pizza is expensive.
I don't want to see you complaining later that you ran out of money and no one warned you. Also, landlords are the biggest troublemakers in this city, so you need to plan on reserves to move around at least twice a year between places... security deposit, movers, etc.
I'm kidding, it's not that bad. 100K will suffice. But don't plan to have a lot of fun.

I would spend some time in Brooklyn. I work in Manhattan most days, and going home to BK to me is a great escape from the city, yet I can hang there whenever. Best of both worlds.

DaveO - Sorry that you are so bitter and negative...
Unlike you, i don't think life about Survival... if you are happy to survive on what you got, good for you. But pointing fingers and saying shit won't get you anywhere.
As most people here think 100K after tax is not much in Manhattan, i don't understand why you see that as high amount and freaking out about it. Maybe you should stop popping that cheap Prozac you got from Craigslist ?

I used to live in BK with a roommate, from 22-25 years old. A nice apartment. But after a while, the so-called shabby-chicness wore off. And I realized it was just hipster-ghetto.
Then I moved to Jersey City.
For about $2000/month, I got to live alone in a nice 1bedroom apartment near the waterfront, near the Path station (10 minutes into downtown). In a modern building with a nice 24hr gym, concierge (convenient never having to be home to accept any deliveries, never having to worry about security, sending out dry cleaning), and a grocery a block away.- that sounds good.nyc939
- honestly, if this sounds good to you then NYC is not really for you. go to any cookie-cutter city in US.pr2
- "10 minutes into downtown", thats not bad. but i don't know better...nyc939
- when I lived in Jersey City, I worked in the West Village. Short commute. Hung out in the city almost everyday after work and Saturdays.randommail
- ... and Saturdays. But it was nice retreat on Sundays to be away from the city.randommail

nyc939. you can live off of $40,000 as an art director I believe and be happy. Many other art directors do here in the city.
- they might want to ask for a raise.Douglas
- or are they freelance and only work for half the year?Douglas
- that's less than HALF of an AD salary right theremonospaced
- Yeah. figure $100k for a NY Art Director.CyBrainX
- hedge0
I don't know what position an Art Director is.... but I hope it's entry-level because $40,000 in NY is absolute shit for anything but entry-level.
- near poverty levelhedge
- around 50k is ok for entry level, right?digdre
- entry level is often just above 50K anywhere in townmonospaced
- akrok0
alright, time for a fucking status update. are you happy or sad as a
"all-white" panda?

"100K after tax "
I don't think anyone said 100k after tax is not awesome. Its actually awesome. 100k pre tax is also awesome.
100k / 12 = 8300 a month??? After tax???
I am going to rob you.

hedge you fucking hero!

hahah $100,000 NYC Livable. Fuck you. Feel privileged. Because that's what you are. If you can't figure out how to live here on $100K, then you've failed. I'm living here on (not much) less than that, and I've lived here on 1/3 of that and I know people who live here on 1/4 of that.
