manhattan is probably not what you think. it's changing quickly. most people I know who moved here moved out of manhattan after the first year. not to say there aren't some good spots, but don't discount BK too soon.

100k is fucking loads to 'live' on.
Don't post on here boasting about your salary.
Douchebag.- 100k can't buy you a 2nd hand duchebag in NYC. You don't need money to "live", but you need money to feel alive.nyc939
- You're a fucking cock.DaveO
- whats wrong this this guy??nyc939
- And greed is good?DaveO
- I just think that it sounds like you're boasting about how mcuh you are offered – loads live on less
DaveO - haha i bet hes a democrat who hate corporations and the rich alike. i agree with davedeathboy
- if u cant get by on 100k then theres something definitely wrong with a persondeathboy

100k may or may not be enough to live on NYC.
If you're single, yeah. If you're married with 2 kids, no fucking way.

The poverty on QBN really gets to me sometimes. It has made me feel bad about the entire design/art/whatever industry. But they made their own career choices.
- well, he ain't working for him self. he's working for someone else. you can never get big bucks that way.akrok
- some people's concept of poverty gets to me sometimes.scenek
- he still lives with mommy and daddy in chicagoSrSamaurai

100k? i'd ask for 20 more so there's enough for a drug party

$100k might be enough to buy mosdesty classes but I wouldn't know because I don't make $100k

The people in poverty are more open about talking about money than people making a lot. Don't take what you read here too seriously. Even this thread is full of jokes. You can get real answers about salary from AIGA surveys and rent figures from word of mouth. Then figure your monthly expenses and you can figure out what you need.

To Dave O
First, 100k is just a rate of what a decent art director gets pay in NYC, so there is nothing to brag about in the first place.2nd, i never live in NYC, so i ask if 100k is good enough to live in the city, its a big move and i need to know if i can be happy.
3rd. While most people here are being very helpful... you come in and calling me a "douchebag" and a "fucking cock" for no reasons... nice one... nice one.
- Forget the money question. Do you have a VISA yet?goldieboy

can't buy humility for 100,000 . . . apparently.

In New York you can have a little fun with 100K but not too much
- showpony0
just to be a bit of a reality check... you said that you're getting 100k but hoping for 120... 100k for a sr. ad is on the upper end (can go a little higher, but not likely... really depends on the accounts). no one is going to pay you 120k for a sr. ad job... the range for acd at a large agency is between 110-135...

barely, I do mean barely
- digdre0
- you can't, that's poverty level shit there braaaa!chilamont
- how much do I have left after Taxesdigdre
- LOL, not enough to live on, put it that way... take out about 30%chilamont
- so how do junior graphic designers live/survive then?digdre
- you can. most my classmates that didn't go into agencies made that and lived fine.scenek
- it's tight, but they weren't slumming it either.scenek
- by agencies you mean Advertising agencies? do they earn more?
i mean living in brooklyn, not manhattan ofcoursedigdre - agencies pay more than small design shops. brooklyn + roommates will be fine.scenek
- agree, brklyn+roommates. youll have lots of goodtimes on no money.Douglas

Thanks everyone,
So it sounds like 100k in Manhattan is consider a "mid-low" income and i need to spend my money very carefully.... Unless i move to other area or sell cats & catnip on the side.

100k is very doable for a good lifestyle. you'll be able to get a nice studio in the city around 2k/month, or be able to spilt a nice 2bdrm for less. if you want to live in a nice part of brooklyn, you'll get a bit more space for your money. plenty people here make way less and have lots of fun, really just depends on your lifestyle. 100k is fine though imo.
- +1. as expensive as nyc can be, there is a TON of free entertainment. films, outdoor concerts, exhibitions, parties, etc.scenek
