If you're doing color correction work, an IPS monitor gives you much more color depth than the usual TN monitor you get at Best Buy which are more for video games than color correction....
Most apple monitors are IPS or similar technology, as are some DELLs and NEC's and EIZO's....

I have
Apple 21" Cinema = good
Samsung 24 Syncmaster 243T" = good,
HP 14" piece of shit, but only use the 3rd monitor for extra pallets or email so it works fine for that

I've got two 24" Apple LED Cinema Displays with the Matrox DualHead2Go Displayport Edition (if you don't have a Mac Pro) plus adaptor cables that I'm looking to sell for $1300 for everything.
A single Display is going for $770, DualHead2Go costs $200, and about $50 worth of high quality cables. That's about a $500 discount Im giving.
Shipping wouldn't be included. If you or anyone else is interested lemme know.

I got a Acer 24in LED and a 19in Gateway i been having for the longest.
I recommend getting something in the 20 inch + range. 19 is small. you can get up to 24 inches for under 200 nowadays

Stay away from TN panels. Most spec sheets will not tell if a monitor has one of those, you need to seek that info online. A low price usually gives TN away.

Thanks for all the suggestions and opinions.
Check out this page, it goes over the difference between TN, VA and IPS monitors.
I had no idea about this before. A must read for anyone looking to buy.

I have a couple of these at home and they're excellent. At work I'm on Apple displays and there's little difference...

They may be discontinued but the Dell 2209WA is a fantastic monitor (IPS panel) that was going for around $220-$240 leading up to Christmas here in Canada.
this website offers reviews and a database of panels you can run a model name against to find out what's inside:

old boss bought the entire office a bunch of 21" kds monitors that he found online for about 50 each. within 6 months they were all bright pink. he called to get a refund as he bought insurance with them, but kept getting rerouted to china, which showed up on the phone bill. he was pretty heated about it.

OK, I need help. I need a monitor ASAP because the Samsung I currently have connected to my MacPro is simply garbage. I would love to get an Apple monitor but to be honest, I don't/can't spend $900 right now. Any other options that might come close to colors/resolution???

Ultrasharp U2410. Not terribly impressed. Some slight tint deviation from magenta to green on the panel. Most people can't see it, I can. Common IPS issue though.
My last Samsung had a yellow deviation towards the bottom that bugged me too. Again most can't see it. I can see magenta and or yellow deviations on many Apple cinema displays as well. Also find cinema display's color is always a little too hot, even with adjustments.
So in short, nothing makes me happy. :) I'd go EIZO, but they have had tint issues too, and I prefer not to pay their premium for similar issues. it's a panel tech/manufacturing issue more than any brand can help.
