torrent ratios

What is the point? In general I seed until I have a 1:1 ratio. If there is only a couple of people I am seeding to I will keep seeding until they get what they need.
For me it's karma, but is there really another reason to be benevolent on torrents? The ratio calculations make no sense (in tranmission at least). I started to download a file at 1.11 overall and now that file is at a 2.44 ratio and my overall ratio is 1.10. How can you upload 1.44x the amount you download and have your ratio drop?

well, it often has a purpose on private trackers beyond just being a nice person. if you only use public trackers there's no point, except if everyone acted that way the whole system would break down! but does transmission track your ratio between sessions? I use uTorrent, and it resets every time you launch it, so it's kind of a useless number. I mean the overall ratio, not per-file.

transmission keeps it overall, i do believe. don't quote me on that though.
- yeah, seems to be overall, but the way they do it makes no sense to meepigraph

I am down with ratios on private trackers. Don't believe Transmission. Look at whatever tracker you are using and that will be accurate.
Also, categories on transmission is your friend. For example, I have three categories...
Seed - for anything that I have to maintain ratio on
Freeleech - for all the freeleech on a certain private tracker
Uploaded - stuff I have uploaded to said private trackerThis helps me maintain my ratio, which I try to keep between 1.5 and 2. The more you give back, the more you are helping the community and allow it to thrive, etc.
