i was just down in michoacan, saw many federales and soldiers.
i must admit that after a few days i realized that the fear i had was just based on all the exaggerated media reports here in the states. many people i know, didn't go because they were scared. yes there's trouble, yes there's problems, stay away from them. didn't drive on isolated highways at night and was fine. guadalajara was like any other day. no problem, had a great time. plus the food is to die for and the mezcal was damn good this time. mexico is gorgeous, complex and will always be my second home.

yep. it's all exaggerated media reports. Just spent a month in the Monterrey and Chihuahua (2nd most dangerous city) areas and things were so nice and calm. Only saw 8 soldiers during my entire stay. Everything was as pleasant as 10 years ago. Will def go back asap.

I'm in Mexico city right now, and as someone who comes down about twice a year to various spots, it has gotten a lot worse over the last 4 years. Death tool has gone up really fast, espicially in 2010. The first time I was in Monterrey we would go to bars and clubs, now we drink at peoples houses. Mexico city seems to be fast becoming the safe place in Mexico :P
I will agree the reports are a little overblown, but you have to be a lot more aware than in the US. Don't ride the subway alone playing on your iphone... don't walk around alone at night. Don't get drunk and walk around like a moron. Take caution. Even San Luis Potosi, my fav small city is now less safe and my friends don't let me walk home alone from bars at 3am any more. Overall I still feel *pretty safe, but certainly not like the US, and I take a lot more caution. Especially since as soon as I open my mouth it's clear I'm not mexican.
I love Mexico, the people are amazing and fun... but it's getting harder to come back and travel around. I worry it will continue to get worse in 2011 :\

I was also in Juarez last year. I would not recommend that to anyone as that is not really overblown and can be a bit scary. The streets and restaurants are like ghost towns. I'm glad I went, but don't think I'll return *there.
Chihuahua was better, but I wasn't very smart going with friends for street hotdogs while drunk at 3am.
Overall I wouldn't recommend going to any border states really, unless you've been doing it for a while, have friends, and know your way around.

Mexico's my fav place to go (cheap, people are super friendly, the land is beautiful). However, after checking the shit out on the blogdelnarco (see link above) with the drug wars and all, makes me think twice and want to go somewhere else. They're chopping people's heads off, chopping private parts off, shooting loads of people, crazy Man on Fire type shit. This shit is happening NOW. Not too long ago, bombing a bar in Cancun. Place ain't safe right now. Yeah, you 'could' stay away from bad areas but if you're not familiar with the area why even take that chance when you could go to another country where you don't have to worry about that. Hope it get's better soon.

the best way to go would be if you already know the place or are there with people who do. boarder cites are out and so are isolated towns at night. vallarta is still my favorite beach spot, super chill and gorgeous. city wise guadalajara is the place.

30,000 people have been killed so far. In what, 4 years? That's insane.
Won't catch me going there. Just not worth the chance. A vacation is to relax, be at peace, and keep your body parts intact.
That's just me, though, others might have different priorities.
