Why are people becoming walkers without being bit?
- YOU SHOULD READ THE COMICGeorgesII

This last episode with the death at the end, it reminded me of the final episode of season 2 of Boardwalk Empire, if anyone here has seen that.
This isnt nearly as shocking as BE, but it was still a surprise. I didnt expect it to happen this soon.

After reading the comics i'm suprised it took this long to kill ***** off. Wish the pace of the 2nd season would pick up a bit, but the last episode definitely has me wanting more.

I just read a great review of that episode on some site and realized that Rick isn't that great of a person. You sort of pull for him in a way as the "leader" but his decisions are just as much up to the same negative scrutiny that he gave Shane on certain decisions. His reaction to what Shane said about him as a father and husband obviously put him over the edge - I guess I'm realizing that some of it's definitely true.
- for me, that's why he's such a great character. It's one of the things they've brought over really nicely from the books.Wolfboy

when t-dog went to open the padlock on the barn he said "alright governor... time to go" which was cool because to me it's a nice name drop for what i hope is coming next. it'll be interesting to see if the show will feel the need to try and explain why the so-and-so came back after you know what. in the book they didn't get into it, the 'why' wasn't as important as the fear of knowing it's inside of you already.

So they may not even explain why they people are turning even if they weren't bitten?
- never really explained in the books. Everyone is infected, zombie bites just cause deathestetic

The zombies are the classic slow walking Romero style zombies, which originated in Night of the Living Dead. Following classic Romero-rules, everyone who dies, for any reason, will re-animate as a zombie except if the brain is damaged/destroyed. Even someone killed by a gunshot wound with no zombies involved at all will re-animate as a zombie. Zombie bites are not how the "infection" is spread. Instead, zombie bites and saliva cause infections that are 100% lethal. Characters have speculated, but cannot confirm, that whatever causes zombies to re-animate is some sort of virus that everyone in the world is technically infected with but is only triggered by death. It is known, however, that upon death, it can take anytime between three minutes and eight hours for the corpse to reanimate. (from the site)
- I guess Dale didn't zombifyRamanisky2
- this.Ironmonkey
- daryl shot dale in the head before he bled out. thus, destroying the brain before he died and turned.kona
- Why would Dale Zombify? He was shot in the head to put him out of his misery... so brain is toast.ETM
- Argh... kona beat me to it.ETM

I think you can get infected while alive, but you don't "walk" until you die. Almost like the infection doesn't take hold until your life is gone. That's the only thing I can think of.
- Yes, everyone is a carrier, death triggers the virus into action.ETM

I mean, these guys bust zombie heads and get zombie blood all over them all the time. They wipe it on their faces, it gets under their nails, it's bound to enter the bloodstream at some point regardless.
- May even be airborne. If it doesn't take effect til you're dead, who would know

Mono:
The basis is that they / we are all infected. It takes you dying to bring it about. The zombies aren't spreading the infection, they are only killing the people.I believe this is what the doctor at the CDC whispered to Rick at the end of season 1... I could be wrong though, he could have told Rick that Lori was pregnant.
- I find it weird that the whole world would simultaneously and spontaneously contract the infectionmonospaced
- I understand that pre-infection is the case though. That much is clear.monospaced
- If that was the case, Rick would have known Shane would reanimate.ETM
- Also, EVERYONE in the world may not have had it initially. But it's been spreading the whole time and continues to.ETM
- so, if it's "spreading" then we can't assume we're all infected; it's a contradiction right theremonospaced
- The CDC doc said it was some form of meningitis that started it.Knuckleberry
