the designers on all of these blogs need to stop submitting their own versions of the logo. they're against crowd-sourcing, yet they're willingly taking part in it.

Gap Inc.does have successful brands.
Old Navy - which is a heavy hitter and introduced the tv spots that feature no contract mannequins.
Banana Republic - their still strong accessible luxury brand.
Piper Line - Shoes and handbags portal
Athleta - Sports line aimed for womenPiperline and Athleta are more portal brands, steering traffic to and from. sitting ion a sub catogory
But Banana Republic and Old Navy are two excellent clothing brands that do hold their market value. It would seem GAP is the weaker of the 3 and would require tweaking.
also mind that at the end of 2009 the company had 2.3 billion in cash and zero debt. so this is not a desperate move. (cit: p:16, Gap Inc. 2009 annual report)

I really want to know what the brief for this thing was, and what the defense for the decision to do this was.
Seriously, it looks like some schoolboy discovered WordArt with this thing.

I like mydo's positive attitude towards the logo, it almost sounds like you are not a QBNer.
I agree with most of what you said, people here tend to be against change in general, but I believe every now and then change is for the better.
You wrote great reasons to why the logo should be changed, but I'm not sure if the new logo is the right choice, but then again, I'm so influenced by the previous logo that maybe that is clouding my judgement.
Maybe not, maybe it just sucks, but I'm open to see something else.

WHAT BRANDING COMPANY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS MESS??? THEY SHOULD BE FIRED!!!

What Mydo says makes perfect sense. Change can be good and sometimes we as humans are afraid of it. But if I step back and look at the new logo objectively and compare it to their previous logo I think the new logo is a fail. But everyone has an opinion.
