So, what happens if this actually passes?

The American market ramps up, 15 years in advance of the world change, as so very often, and Europe ends up importing from the States because we're so fucking late to turn around our legislation.
I'll be fairly pissed off if, in 10 years, it's mainly American-made weed brands that are on the shelves in Europe.
This should be our game.

CA != America so you don;t need to worry.

You guys all know the arguments for and against this. If you are in CA, please vote on this, however you feel about it.

i wonder if tobacco companies will jump on board. i can see joints being sold in packs like cigaretets

You could see a showdown between the federal gov and CA, after all it's still illegal nationally. I don't think individual states had the right to "opt out" during prohibition.

I will never understand this.. Marijuana which is used as a drug sometimes and can't really kill you or do some really bad things to you is illegal because it clouds your mind for a period of time but cigarettes are legal and have proven to cause cancer, to be the main reason behind heart related deaths and so on..
Blows minds.
- Tobacco has richer and more powerful lobbyists.DRIFTMONKEY
- it's because one can grow weed in their back yard. they cant charge you for it, so they make it 'illegal'. stupid.iCanHasQBN

everything causes cancer, doesn't it?
besides, alcohol is legal, and IMO it's more dangerous than weed.
- fuck yes it's more dangerous than weed. when was the last time someone got high to death?scarabin

Solve your crime problems, legalize everything.

"Simply put, the Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Initiative does not reflect most people’s ideas of what legalization would be. The media often incorrectly reports that this initiative calls for “full legalization” of marijuana. It does not. In fact, it reverses many of the freedoms marijuana consumers currently enjoy, pushes growers out of the commercial market, paves the way for the corporatization of cannabis, and creates new prohibitions where there are none now. Apparently, to be pro-legalization and pro-initiative are two different things entirely."

*puts on tinfoil hat.
I'd be very surprised if the tobacco companies aren't behind this with the decline of smoking in the civilised world. They'd love to just switch crops and keep on doing what they do.
It's really the Asian markets where they are making the money now, but even those will slowly start to stagnate over the next 20–30 years.

I figure that our lungs aren't very good at working well when we regularly breath in smoke. I'd imagine burning and inhaling anything, will lead to problems - but I'd like to be proven wrong.

My friend James is heading up part of the campaign for this... There are awesome arguments for the decriminalizing, sure, but no one can predict what the fallout would be on neighboring states.
I'd be interested to see. I gave up hope of there ever being anything like this about 20 years ago, would be nice to think about retiring in a world that was just that significant bit more rational in this regard, if nothing else..
