Here is the deal. If a app dev makes an app in flash that runs like shit on the iPhone, no one will buy it, download it or install it.
It is like everyone who is against flash on the iPhone thinks that the old Kimble or NRG web site is going to be ported to the fucking thing in every instance.

@raf
how is Adobe monopolizing anything? SWF is open specification. Adobe makes the best tools it's simple as that. They bought Macromedia and integrated their apps into their suite. It's not like they killed any of them.. Okay Freehand but let's face it Illustrator was already an industry standard so there was no point keeping both apps.
The scarier of the two is Apple. Because they set precedents in anti-competitive behavior, they are poster child for DRM, closed up system that we as a technological society have been working so hard to avoid. They make nice icons and slick devices and in return you get the worst draconian piece of technology it's ridiculous.
Flash allowed us to evolve web. To bring video, interaction, applications that work on all browsers without writing thousands of lines of code to make sure it will appear the same.
I can't wait personally for Apple to croak. That day will come as they are putting all of their eggs into one basket. iOS. and when Android takes the majority of the market and Apple's market-share falls below 15% I think they will face huge issues in maintaing revenue.
Just like it happened with computers.
- hahaha...have fun waitingukit
- I'm a flash evangelist, but i find these arguments very one sided...kingsteven
- we wouldn't have spotify if we didn't have itunes, we wouldn't have itunes if we didn't have DRMkingsteven
- I could tell you a thing or two about spotify vs the music industry that would make you rethink apple being good.zarkonite
- Yeah, i don't want to condone their business practice, just that they know how to strike a balance.kingsteven
- create services, raise expectations, move towards a digital economy... even if they are occasionally wee shitskingsteven

- probably more to do with antitrust lawsuits. App Store success has proved how right they werePIZZA
- Apple were wrong to enforce the policy in the first place. Highlighting app-store success as a reason why they weren't wrong, is stupid.lukus_W
- wrong, is stupid.lukus_W
- how right they were... on their own head, the public has spoken, then yelled, this is the resultMiguex

"as long as the resulting apps do not download any code" what does this mean exactly? ie. self updating / code that will be executed ie. applications compiled as swf or sthg. or would this include markup and the like?

I guess this doesn't mean they'll allow some kind of Flash plugin for Safari on iOS. That's the infinitely huger issue than Flash-based apps. It's still a crippled browser without Flash.
I have a question for all the Flash-bashers. If you load a page with Flash that bogs down your phone, you can always shut it. Do you really want to be restricted from every instance of Flash on the web, no matter how simple, efficient and awesome it might be? Answering yes to that question must mean you think every example of Flash is bad. At least Jakob Nielson rated it at 99% bad.

no xml is not code.. it's talking about execution code (for example downloading an swf that has a code executing something but is not part of the initial app). With Flash CS5 iPhone packager you can't even do that, so you are safe. XML, databases and APIs are all data not execution code.

@lukus_W
Nah.. they are not saying sorry..they got their ass kicked by Android and government inquiry..That's why..
They certainly didn't do it out of the goodness of their heart.

I see about 20-30 iphones a day in londonPIZZA - Of course not - it's all about incentives. They have had to backtrack though .. which is pretty similar to an admitting they didn't get it right first time.lukus_W

I never bothered setting this up in flash before... Where do i get this p12 certificate? Already registered as iOS dev for work, downloading the SDK now, presuming this creates a certificate I can export from keychain access?

"They bought Macromedia and integrated their apps into their suite. It's not like they killed any of them.. "
As much as I don't feel like arguing with you Boz, they bought their only direct competition which counted on the market and killed overlapping products: GoLive, Freehand, ImageReady and whatever it was that was supposed to be Flash killer back in 2000.
I can replace my MacBook with a similar competing computer with Windows (not that I'd like that). I can replace my iPhone with many competing products on the market.
I can replace Photoshop with... wait, I cannot, because Adobe swallowed their competition.
I can replace Flash with... nothing yet, but hopefully at some point with a free standard wrongfully or not called html5, in large part thanks to Apple policy.Not sure if you get it: I can choose if I have to pay Apple, but we all have to pay Adobe.
- LiveMotionPIZZA
- Hahah, who do you think they swallowed in terms of Photoshop exactly, Corel? Bullshit. They have a monopoly, but very little of it has to do with them buying Macromedia.NONEIS
- has to do with them buying Macromedia.NONEIS
- You're actually right, Photoshop had not MM equivalent. Still, it applies to all other app categories mentioned.raf
- you talk as tho Macromedia had something to compete with Photoshop.zarkonite
- from a web design perspective it does, Firefox kicks the shit out of Photoshop for UI workPIZZA
- but wankey digital painting shit and photo retouching then yeah no rivalPIZZA
