EPS or PDF?

I've always exported my work as a PDF X:1A when sending things out to print... but my new boss is saying she only uses EPS files when sending out, and in my brief the company requesting an ad asked for a high res eps, and then said the next best thing would be a pdf or jpeg.....
Aren't pdfs better? Should I be trying to push pdfs instead of eps?

tell your boss she is stuck in old ways.

I was always under the impression EPS was a better format. But, I also learnt this almost 15 years ago ...

confirm the 'best' format with your printer. maybe they'll want eps files for some reason that suites them...
- Yeah that's what I was thinking too.AmandaLee
- or maybe they'll want native quark 3.32 files... (*cringes)prophet

Make sure you output an FNL and an SCR.

i'll tell you one thing. i used to place eps ads into a magazine. and it was great, however, the resulting .ps file was some ungodly size - like 1GB+. since we switched to placing pdfs and then exported from indesign to a press pdf the results are exactly the same and my files are like 150-200mb. faster output for sure.

we always prefer when people send in an eps for anything printed. it's nothing to do with the file format, but when we have problem files 99% of the time it's a pdf. usually comes down to someone not knowing how to embed fonts or how to deal with transparency issues and such. also, we usually have to convert from a pdf to an eps for the printer rip to adjust the color profiles.

PDF > EPS every time. Your vendors will thank you.
- Well, unless you don't know how to make a PDF properly, then it could get all screwy...duckofrubber

PDF.
EPS files were best for outputs back in the day because they allowed for type to be processed into vectors which in turn helped them output very crisply.
Since the advent of PDFs, print people have saved themselves hours worth of RIP time because PDFs do a really good job of compressing images while keeping typefaces as math (ie: readable/vector.)
That and I fucking hate how long it takes for Adobe to render eps files.
- for us it's not about the rip time as much as the lack of editing color in a pdf- we have to convert to eps anyway
