I wonder if this would be the right time for Apple to introduce a new lower cost, mass market computer now that they have all this momentum from iPhone, iPad, etc...
I think a lot of people who are not techies are starting to view Apple as a more viable choice but it might be a little out of their price range. Also something like 65% of the world's computers still run Windows XP. So they will be upgrading to something in the next couple years, huge opportunity there.
- no way, part of the marketing attractive is that is more "expensive" hence "I'm better than you" attitudeMiguex
- "Macs. Better than Miguex." - Steve Jobskpl
- hahahaMiguex
- Aren't mac minis the "lower cost" option?Pixter
- Not user friendlyukit
- Remember the original iMac, it was targeted at the mass marketukit
- Yeah. What features would you strip away to justify the price drop? Not much can be done that won't de-lustre other lines.Gucci
- ukit... this is why Steve Jobs is rich and runs a huge company and you don'tPIZZA

they bumped down the prices so its not really a high priced product any more.

"With PCs running Windows 7, you can play the videos and music stored on your home PC while you're on the go, for free. Apple charges $99/year for its online service."
they do have apple on this one.

Why is the OS so important? I care about the applications, and that the OS can run them well. Photoshop is, well, Photoshop on mac or pc, or if and when someone wrote a version for it, on linux. And when I go the web the browser is well, the browser. Isn't that what matters?

Dont they understand they are clowns?

All my life I have been using PC, didn't like all the Mac hype. I used to use NC (Norton Commander) back in the days on my PC and got used to that sort of file browsing, continued to use Windows Commander, later Total Commander. One thing I didn't like on Mac, was different file browsing method. Later, I googled a bit and found out that there is Disk Order (works like Total Commander), and also found out after using my friends Mac for a month that Mac actually works better than PC. I was also worried about the file system thing, because I had all my large external disks set on NTFS (windows) which doesn't quite work with Mac.. Ofcourse, there's an app for that and now it works just fine. I totally forgot about the Total Commander kind of file browsing an am now using Mac.
I'm working in the fields of graphic design, video production and music. All that on Mac is just simpler, more stable than on PC and it all just seems to work together perfectly. I will never go back to PC.
I also have all my Apple stuff in sync with my Mac (iPhone and iPad).

I'll repeat it for the thousandth time: I wonder why there's still no third option. Plenty of usable linuxes out there waiting to be packaged and sold en masse like Apple once did.
- not enough marketingdorf
- You could say this about Democrats and Republicans too, no? Seems people like two limiting choices in life.Gucci
- there are whole sections of society who struggle to type or write PC or Mac let alone linux.Amicus
- not to mention the fact that Macs are actually PCs and we should use the term Windoze instead.Amicus
- I wouldn't say that people like two choices, it's made to seem like they ONLY have two choices.dorf

I have always had both, Mac desktop and a PC laptop for testing and interviews. Works out great, and you get the best of both world, lets not forget that some apps you just cannot get on a mac. I have some diagnostic tools which I use on my car which has saved me an absolute fortune over the years and you would never get that on a mac.

i prefer windows myself, but i particularly despise the mac OS X mouse acceleration. its like weight training for mouse movement, so heavy.

I just run windows 7 with bootcamp when I need it. I have all the irritation I need without having to buy another computer.
Of course now their validation process broke down and I have to go through a 47 step process to re-validate software I actually bought. Yay windows 7.

So this in no reason to buy a Mac over a Windows machine, but explains one reason why I love the Mac so much. It's the attention to detail...
I just recently got an HP laptop for work because I needed a Windows machine. And I got to say, the difference in unboxing a MacBook and a [insert other windows laptop here] is HUGE.
The packaging, the design, how everything felt, the whole experience just felt good with the Mac. Starting up the machine and even going through the basic OS setup was actually a pretty good experience. It was exciting, and it felt like something special.
The HP was shit. Ugly boxes, with excess packaging. Felt like a chore to open and plug it in. Then I boot it up and click through endless fucking nonsense of packaged 3rd party software just to set up the machine. The whole experience was crap and had no soul to it. By the end of it all, I was just annoyed. Now it sits there staring at me, and I hate when I have to use it.
But to me, that whole attitude and attention to detail goes beyond the packaging and marketing on the Mac. The form factor, the OS, etc. To me it's worth the extra scratch.
I just wish Steve Jobs wasn't such a dickbag.

hahahha, This is Gold
"Use Windows 7 to simplify your life.
Windows 7 was designed to make it simpler to do the tasks you do every day, with features that the Mac doesn't have. For example, the new Snap feature makes it easy to view two documents side by side."- yeah, using a grid as a tool for layout is comedy gold.zarkonite

Get a PC and you can even go full retarded!
Anyaway I will play devil's advocate and will note a few ones. I'm a long time user of both systems as back in the old days it was impossible running any Macromedia soft (yes you heard right) on a G3-G4 based computer.
- The character map in PC is a simple application that mac could have and it doesn't.
- Macs are cheaper now but still the price is way above in similar in like for like tech specs. However
- Branded PCs as VAIO are as expensive as macs and a lot shittier
- PCs have no soul. Full stop.
...and if you spend 10 hours plus in front something soul-less you might start losing yours!- still asleep.
way above in like for like spec
sorry for the shit writingmaikel - vaio expensive as mac?
my €1000 laptop specs would have cost me the price of a powerbook if I wanted a mac, georgesIII - So what you are saying is that your PC is expensive. With £1000 you get a basic 13' macbook pro. Is your laptop...maikel
- ...better or worse than that in terms of what's inside?maikel
- lol, we ran a shit-ton of Macromedia software of G3s and G4s, where did you get THIS SHIT from?monospaced
- from EXPERIENCE mono. Macromedia on its early versions worked a lot faster in PC. At that time Adobe was...maikel
- by far quicker on mac. now it is about he same...maikel
- still asleep.
- ernexbcn0
- I know the tool. But anybody who has used mac and pc have to admit that for once the PC app is simpler.maikel
- The Mac version does a lot more you do realise...PIZZA
- don't give me that. sometimes you only want to know where to find a bloody arrow and that's allmaikel
- if you're looking for esotheric glyphs, you don't want simple, you want fucking comprehensive.kpl
