that's not aluminum, it's steel.
- aaaaaaargh, the fucker lied to me, I'll ask for my 20 euros back :)
georgesIII - well, it's important as you'd treat aluminum differently than steelacescence
- can you give me some tips, I've worked an entire week on it, I don't want to fuck it up now
georgesIII - steel is better than alu if you're just cruising around. way classier and more durable.iCanHasQBN
- and typically a smoother rideacescence
- and aluminumum gets weird if scratched hard...vaxorcist

Pick your own fucking bike color, dude!
- JK. Silver is the best, IMO.chalk
- I'm kinda scare it will be dull,
I rather go for a matte black than a silver, georgesIII

take off the bottom bracket and headset, wash and degrease it, hang it, prime it, wait 24 hours and then sand it with really fine sandpaper, wash it, then put on your paint, sand with superfine paper and wash between coats, clearcoat it.

if it were actually aluminum, i'd say get it media blasted (sand blasting would heat the frame and potentially warp it) and just polish it and don't do a thing to it. but you can't do that with steel because it'll rust :(

How's the crank? It looks like it has cotter pins.... they tend to get slippy on me on my old bikes.....
My current fixie has a sugino crank replacing the original untight messy one... huge difference in ride and power feeling....
- I had all the problem in the world to take out the cotter, I will see if I need to order a new onegeorgesIII
- cotters suck! get a new COTTERLESS crank... sugino or shimano 105vaxorcist

That frame has some really nice (ornamental) component-based joint sections. On the seatpost, headstem, and crank assemblies. Don't know if you feel so ambitious but they'd look pretty amazing if you masked them off and had them bare metal against whatever color the frame you decide. It will definitely provide a nice tie-in accent given the bare metal handlebars, seatpost etc. Just caught my eye...

the work is coming pretty nicely but the damm stem is stuck in the fork,
any tips would be good,
I let it soak the entire day in oil,
if tomorrow it still won't come out, I'll bring it to the bike store

Ok, I'm almost there,
the frame is polished completely and I would like to clean it up before starting painting. Is there some product I should use or I can go for the normal soap + water team?

Go to an auto paint supply store and ask for a wax remover/degreaser. You'll want to prime it with self-etching primer as well.

Progress update please!
A few things to note:
* Rattlecanning will scratch easily which means the frame is gonna start oxidising/rusting where bare metal is exposed. Look into getting it powder coated, it'll be a shitload cheaper in the long run.
* Very nice lugwork on that frame
* What are you going to be doing about drivetrain? Whats the BB shell width, rear dropout orientation, rear dropout spacing? It will probably be easier (and cheaper) to go singlespeed or fixed than getting hold of front and rear mech, cassette, and having a rear wheel built up with the appropriate hub. If you want something with a certain amount of clandestine niceness that is.- Disregard the dropout orientation bit, I just saw the pics again.rounce

If anything goes wrong with the hand paint job I'd suggest shipping the frame to Olympic Powder Coating in Orange County. I had my frame done there and shipped back to me. Aluminum is $130 for chemical stripping, steel a bit less cause it's sand blasting.

They do all of the power coating for intense cycles. Takes about 5 days total.
- sadly I live in italy.
thanks for the link thoughgeorgesIII
