So, I know I'm going to be moving in March, so I took the moment to check out apartments. Fuckin'-A, the rents went right back up! They had fallen significantly after the recession hit, and it was a renter's market again. Oh well, back to astronomical prices for glorified closets.
- i read that lots of apt. still keep the same $$$$. so don't feel that bad.akrok
- your apartment is nice though. now, find something not to expensive and nice, that's hard.akrok
- my apartment is gorgeous...did you just infer this?monospaced

for that price range i'd look into greenpoint, park slope / prospect heights, williamsburg (east of BQE), or even long island city. most people i know find astoria to be a bit far away/uneventful, and you can find similarly priced/safe apartments with quicker access to lower manhattan.
- good to know. thanks.akrokdesign

I'd look into Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, Prospect Heights - all are safe (Relatively speaking, of course), all are close to things to do/eat/see, all are close to Prospect Park/Brooklyn Museum/Brooklyn Library.
I moved to Crown Heights, which is just across the park from Park Slope, and so far I'm loving it. A bit cheaper, you'll get a bit more for your money (I have a 2br for $1500), not as soccer-mom/stroller-filled as Park Slope, still close to everything, safety factor may drop a bit.

Despite a broken collar bone, my move went well - friends came through in the clutch.
Unpacking is slow going, though...

Streeteasy.com
the only place i would look is Streeteasy.com. BUT - AND THIS IS VITAL - click on 'advanced' when you search and then click on 'Has Address'. this means that that the apartment actually exists (as opposed to just being a posting from a realtor who is trying to make his company look good by posting great apartments at cheap prices)
its updated daily too. i dont think any other site has this and it means it cuts so much time chasing fake places.
its where i got my place about a month ago.
