I know this topic has been covered again and again here; however, there was one particular thread where I believe people recommended different sites/ways of finding places to rent other than Craigslist - I'm getting a bit tired of rereading the same listings from day to day.
So, anyone have any suggestions? Planning on staying in Brooklyn, just need to get out of Bushwick - I'm over it. I've been looking at some spots in and around Windsor Terrace, Lefferts Gardens, Prospect Heights, Fort Greene etc.

I would just go to real estate agents in whatever area you want to live in.

I know the Actors Fund has a Seminar on finding housing. It is free and they give quite a bit of information. I went to their seminar on insurance and learned quite a bit.
As a freelancer any free advice is good advice. And since they are a non-profit they really do their best to help people.

Best thing to do:
1) Find a neighborhood that you want to live in.
2) Find the best block you want to live in.
3) Fine the apt that you want to live in.
4) Ask doorman or ask someone who lives there to see if there are places available.

Actually just signed a lease a few days ago for a spot a couple blocks east of Prospect Park. Moving in this weekend.
In the end, craigslist came through.

So, I know I'm going to be moving in March, so I took the moment to check out apartments. Fuckin'-A, the rents went right back up! They had fallen significantly after the recession hit, and it was a renter's market again. Oh well, back to astronomical prices for glorified closets.
- i read that lots of apt. still keep the same $$$$. so don't feel that bad.akrok
- your apartment is nice though. now, find something not to expensive and nice, that's hard.akrok

Despite a broken collar bone, my move went well - friends came through in the clutch.
Unpacking is slow going, though...
