i've been seriously thinking about building a coop in my backyard to raise a couple of chickens for eggs
- < kinkyJimbo82
- if you can, it's awesome and relatively simple. just keep the predators awaymonospaced
- my girl loves 'em but hates how chickens are treatedscarabin
- sexual predatorsJimbo82
- I don't think 2 chickens will give you eggsPixter
- sure they will. 2 chickens will give you roughly 1-2 eggs a day.arthur
- arthur is right...we had 1 chicken and at the end of the week we had 6-8 eggsmonospaced
- yeah, they do. i raised chickens in texas as a kid. they pop out roughly one a dayscarabin
- i would love to have fresh eggs, so would my cats!sea_sea
- Pixter, did you know chickens dont need to have sex to produce eggs?set
- they do need to have sex (or a rape at least) http://www.youtube.c…Pixter
- no, they only need sex to fertilize themmonospaced
- um . . . ~ 1 egg a day? . . . wowjmilligan

We've got a coop and run in our backyard, designed it myself. Got 3 hens who lay between 2-3 eggs a day, all brown, sometimes with spots. Taste 100% better than anything you can get in the store. The shell color has to do with breed only.
The chickens are bad-ass. Scares the hell out of the cats. You've never seen a cat run so fast as when they are being chased by an airborne pissed-off chicken.
- really?? i was worried about my cats eating the chickens... fresh eggs, now there's a thought! :)sea_sea
- they're vulnerable as chicks, but full grown chickens are meaner than cats.arthur
- raccoons and rats are a different matter though. gotta build your coop tight and not leave them out at night.arthur
- dogs will eat the shit out of some chickensscarabin

- plus they eat most of your food waste and turn it back into food for you.arthur
- chicks cost $1-$3 in most cases.arthur
- You eat chicken shit?Jimbo82

What's the difference between kinky and perverted? Kinky is using a feather. Perverted is using the whole chicken.

I don't know, but I feel sorry for the chickens. This country (USA) treats factory farmed animals like shit.
- which is why you shouldn't buy factory farmed shit, there are alternatives.acescence
- short of picking them up personally from a forward-thinking farm, your best guilt-free option is the urban chickenscarabin
- i got to the point where i can't even eat store-bought eggs anymore without feeling like an assholescarabin

Because the egg farmers are racist.
- Can you blame them? I mean, have you seen those cocks?Peter

So, what exactly is a free-range chicken egg? They're right next to the regular eggs in question, and not that much more expensive. I imagine they're from chickens that run around in a coup, which sounds better than those horrid egg factories. They are better eggs, too, from my experience cooking them.

We get our eggs from the person who owns the chickens, which run around freely, and are fed a vairied wholesome diet. The farmer is Amish.
We have to buy them on the down-low because he's just man with some chickens, not a registered egg producer. They are refrigerated. They are awesome, big and flavourful - each one tastes and looks slightly different. I eat maybe a couple a day on home-made stone-ground sourdough bread with organic veggies.
Fucking yes to post-modern food.

The eggs have Vitiligo...
