We've got a coop and run in our backyard, designed it myself. Got 3 hens who lay between 2-3 eggs a day, all brown, sometimes with spots. Taste 100% better than anything you can get in the store. The shell color has to do with breed only.
The chickens are bad-ass. Scares the hell out of the cats. You've never seen a cat run so fast as when they are being chased by an airborne pissed-off chicken.

- they're vulnerable as chicks, but full grown chickens are meaner than cats.arthur
- raccoons and rats are a different matter though. gotta build your coop tight and not leave them out at night.arthur
