what. a. thread....
It is almost impossible to explain what are the roots of masonry without a good understanding of symbolism and ritualism. We sadly live in a time where two pages of informations read from the net are taken as absolute truth.
The best version of the stonecutter story doesn't come from that damned simpson episode but from Jodorowsky's Metabarons.
What I'm trying to explain is that more people will join the mason to be part of something than go up Jacob's ladder. those are the one who poison the craft because they breed stupidity.

I got hold of the 62's italian version of "Die nichtchristlichen Religionen" ( the non christian religions)
you can probably find it for a buck in your own language, give it a try it is a interresting read

How can networks be formed, that operate across and throughout formal hierarchies of power?
Well, one way to achieve this is to start a 'secret' club.
I think it's all about politics. The myths, stories and theatrics create a compelling narrative. 'Story' is integral to human existence - without a common yarn, it's very difficult for humans to stand together.
Imo, freemasonry spins a good yarn - in exactly the same way that Scientology uses narrative to spark its member's imaginations.
The aims of the organisation are political.
- Please, I don't think you can compare the Masons to Scientologists.monospaced
- ... well, they are both 'secret clubs' .. so I guess there's at least _some_ comparison be made?lukus_W
- One calls itself a religion, the other doesn't. Big difference.monospaced
- I think religion is often a means of political control.lukus_W
- I actually agree with lukus, for once. I don't think calling something a religion (or not) necessarily makes it so.gramme
- Everyone's religion is the thing which is most important to them, whether we call it a religion or not.gramme
- It's all rather semantic, imo.gramme
- it does not exist solely to have a "good yarn" for members to believe in.scarabin
- if that were true you could replace the whole thing with a star trek (or insert any other movie here) fan clubscarabin
- the aims of SOME members may be political, but politics has zero to do with the groupscarabin

it's an initiatory system guarding a central teaching. you might not have considered this, but some knowledge must be prepared for. some realizations simply cannot take place without an extensive framework of concept, experience, and symbology to base it on. the lower degrees are NECESSARY in order to understand the teachings of the higher ones.
that's why there are degrees, that's why there are secrets. you don't know their secret teachings not because you don't belong to some bullshit bloodline or you're not rich enough or whatever you heard on paranoid talk radio, it's because you're simply not ready to receive them.
HOWEVER, you must be invited to advance to the next degree and if the members above you feel you're not ready or not the right material you could plateau. you just have to show that you take it seriously and that you're a solid man.

the whole purpose of initiatory systems is to guard a certain piece of knowledge or tool, and to keep it alive; to keep it from being forgotten.
- that's exactly what is so intriguing to me!monospaced
- also, becoming and remaining an upstanding man is admirable.monospaced
- mono most of the knowledge is already out there,
just need to look for itgeorgesIII - yes, it's all fucking around you, but you will never see or understand it because you don't have the necessary preparationscarabin
- that's the whole pointscarabin
- coolmonospaced
- If one wants to keep knowledge from disappearing, shouldn't it be catalogued and disseminated to the public?gramme
- again, some knowledge must be prepared forscarabin
- ...and some things are sacredscarabin

the main reason i think most people don't rise to the highest ranks is because most people are stupid. look around you, compare the number of sheep to the number of self-driven people who rose through the ranks of other circles. it's the same thing with the masons. these people join for the sake of joining and to enjoy the perks. they don't rise because they don't rise anywhere else in life anyway

what's really awesome is that after years of preparation and work, when the next concept really clicks it's nothing short of an epiphanic, "religious" experience. first time it happened to me i laughed for a solid two hours straight from the sheer bliss and overwhelming joy of the realization. it unlocked years of shit i had studied without really knowing what it was and it suddenly all became crystal fucking clear...
- to this day i wonder if i accidentally discovered the inner secret of the OTO because this key unlocked EVERYTHING i could get my hands onscarabin
- could get my hands onscarabin
- did you discover that you worship Jesus?? ahahahhahageorgesIII
- no, jesus has nothing to do with it, it's more fundamental than thatscarabin
- but i really shouldn't say more on thatscarabin
- So interesting scarabin. I want to talk about this more.monospaced
- I was joking off course,
the more I learn the less I know, it is often discouraginggeorgesIII - such is lifescarabin
