In school my profs always suggested a "leave-behind" when applying for design jobs. Seems kinda tacky to me, but I'm pretty desperate to get hired!
Any thoughts or examples of non-embarrassing promo materials? The ones I've seen are almost always super gimmicky and lame.

"leave-behind" AKA a business card.

I have assembled a small printed packet that contains an additional resume, business card and duplexed 11x17 poster(duplexed at work on laser-copier stock) that features some of my work all bound with a simple mini-binder clip. Has worked well for me in the past. Unfortunately no screens of this.
- Yeah I'm thinking something really simple like that.mope

the "leave-behind" was the reason I got hired for my first gig. My boss told me after I got the job, he hired me because I knew how to market myself.
My "leave behind" was 5 sheets about 3"x4" with a brad in the corner so they rotated and just had cropped sections of work i had done. simple.

My friend had a business card size calander done (12 pieces) with a piece of work on one side and just a simple month date concept on the back. Wish I had a pic of it but it was pretty cool looking.

The collest thing I've seen (but expensive) was a guy I knew did a small package/box, inside was what looked like a medical bag of blood, his resume, and a quick exmaple of his work.... the main message on the box was something like "I heard you needed some fresh blood"
...got him the job I thihnk. Just very creative and beautifully well done.

if they like you and your work they will hire you, concentrate on your portfolio

When I was finishing portfolio school, I made mini-books with a funny little hand drawn flip-through story when you flipped it over onto the other side. I think it worked, I was working before school ended...but seriously, make sure your portfolio is golden first before you work on the 'afters'. Good luck!!!

^ Weird - I made some flip books too. Some as "thank you" notes, others "I'd love an interview". One side is video frames of me waving and pointing to the text which is on the other side.
I'm sending them to a few CD's and seeing if they bite.
