the challenge will be to keep the momentum going once king steve passes.

also, microsoft seems to have been pretty quiet lately, particularly with their latest windows release.
meanwhile, philanthropist bill gates continues to give away millions.. funny how things have changed the last ten years.

It is mostly ipods and ipads, not computers.
- yepJazX
- aren't those computers? they compute things do they not?spifflink
- I think he meant what everyone determines as a classical computerJazX
- mobile & cloud computing hacve turned the classical computing model on its ear. Take that M$sherm
- well really they are all part of the same platformspifflink
- Thing is traditional desktop market is not where the money is anymoreukit
- the category is technology company, not computers...jaylarson

If you think that MS is losing ground in business, you're crazy. What are the stats on MS OS's within the business world alone? They make all their money off of MS Office and Windows. I don't think Gates gives a rat's @ss. He's more afraid of Google and their online apps.
- SteveJobs0
they've just been quiet as in not really innovating or competing with apple in any interesting way, either in products or just marketing. they are staying true to their core business, which is fine - they aren't going anywhere.
- JazX0
^that's true, it's funny though, seems like HP, which would run some sort of version of Windows or possibly Linux, gave up on the Slate.
MS still doing this? http://gizmodo.com/5365297///gal…

Wrong though Steve, I mean I agree their core business will support them but they have been trying to compete, with very little success.
Does anyone want to buy a Zune? They tried to so hard to market that thing, but the brand is pretty laughable now. The Urge music store was supposed to be their iTunes competitor, it failed. Windows OS for phones is losing market share. Bing didn't really make a dent in Google's search dominance. The only real success is X Box but even there it hasn't really made them any money yet.
- Right, all except for Bing, it actually will consider MS owns Yahoo. Don't believe for a second they'll keep it alive...JazX
- ... years down the road. Migration will be slowJazX
- If they didn't care, why did they just axe Bach and J Allard?ukit
- this sh*t type..! I meant, Yahoo will become part of Bing one day. 301 redirect or whateverJazX
- You're saying MSFT buys Yahoo? A giant conglomerate of stagnation?:)ukit
- Or just the search deal?ukit
- just Yahoo search, who the f8ck knows what they want to do portal wise. I was being generalJazX

The iPhone 4g better have some seriously dope features otherwise they will be losing ground quickly. It takes Apple 2-3 years to come out with new iPhones and Android is more nimble for developers. Puts Apple at a disadvantage IMO.
- Plus there is only one model of iPhones and presumable 10 models with Android OS.DrBombay
- imo, Android is a stable and more versatile OS all around. more popular at this point, no, but...JazX
- that fragments the android platform thoughspifflink
- It makes it a platform though, rather than one product.DrBombay

- ipod touch, iphone, ipad are different devices all with tens of millions of units already out there. sounds like a platform.spifflink
- Android also lends itself to a possible future of being able to upgrade without shelling out on more expensive contracts e.t.c. You may simply be able to upgrade by downloading newer software.orrinward
- You can upgrade by simply downloading the new OS in the same way someone upgrades the OS on their puter.orrinward
- That is if the idea isn't throttled by phone manufacturers. No harm done to Google by offering this.orrinward
- Where Apple loses it's lifeblood if this becomes available.orrinward
- They will both be around. Keep in mind though Apple makes $ on every iPhone soldukit
- Google develops Android for free. It's an advertising opportunity for them.ukit
- It's only 'free' to the consumer. Every Android Phone sold is less money to competitors.orrinward
- leading to increased profit for Google. They potentially suffocate the opposition with minimum financial outlay.orrinward
- does apple not upgrade things as they upgrade software? its not like software ups the MP of the camera or puts in a new radio chipspifflink
- radio chipspifflink
- Apple consistently releases new iPhones every June/JulyCyBrain

nah, i don't think those aren't their core business either. it has pretty much always ms office and windows. the penetration of windows and windows server and ms office in corporations worldwide is still high, and most dells, hp, compaq, etc. all ship with windows installed. that's what's been working for them thus far.
- orrinward0
Microsoft sells operating systems, not computers themselves. This is something that I find is too easily overlooked. How much money from the Sony Vaio you just bought goes to Microsoft. How much of the money from the Macbook Pro you also just bought goes to Apple, you lucky rich bastard!
- hence, why a lot of groups look at Linux as an alternativeJazX
- xcarlx0
That is only their assessed value based on their stock price, which really means nothing. Just like the Real Estate prices in 2006, or Enron's stock price in 1999.
Apples stock price may very well be over valued, especially if they have regulatory problems coming up.
In actual value to the world, the ability to hack together a computer in your basement and get it running for under 400 bucks trumps anything apples completely closed systems have ever done for computing. Thats one reason why around the world, the vast majority of mission critical systems run some variant of MS or Linux systems and software.
Microsoft is not going away any time soon.
i am typing this in a mac btw :)

it'd be interesting to see what would happen if:
1) ballmer was ousted
2) ms hired some *talented* product designers (perhaps some ex apple employees?)
3) ms integrated mcaffee or norton or kaspersky into their os.

@ukit.
Yes, I have a Zune HD, and it's fucking amazing. Just because it's not owning the iPod in marketshare does not mean it's any less awesome.
- Cool storyukit
- brojohanito
- I like the Zune as well. :) Love it more than my iPod.twistedfork
- does the Zune play m4a and AAC files???monospaced
