I have two Lacies, the big disk d2 thing (160GB) that I've had for 6 years and a 1TB like citizen's pick above that I bought a few months ago. So far no problems on either except one had a shitty USB cable but I was going to use a sturdier one anyway.

I've always used Lacie, but recently the power bricks have been shitting the bed, making lots of noise and one just plain dead. G-Tech G- Drives seem to be a better bet.

went ahead with the WD Studio. I'm liking it, super fast (via FW800) and super silent. The Smartware VCD thing, fuck it, it's only a mounted disc... can live with that.
- mine doesn't mount the virtual cd anymore...I didn't do anything to fix it. weird huh?monospaced

I've had mine for a while now, can't fault it, and looks great on your desk.

I recently picked these up (very happy):

- recently installed the caviar in my computer, took over as primary and f1went to secondary.********
- however the caviar has slight ticking noise. scared me at first but seems to run fine********

Lacies are SHIT. Don't bother. Our agency is full of dead Lacies. They are just enclosures with cheap HDDs in them. Get a USB SATA docking thing, and buy some cheap 500-1TB drives. You wont regret itl

I have a WD MyBook and a Seagate somethingorother, no problems so far. MyBook comes with some retarded software built in that you'll probably want to ditch ASAP (especially if you're Time Machining it). Firewire is on the way out.

Firewire is on the way out? Eh?

had a friend whose MyBook just took a shit.
i upgraded my PS3's 2.5" 120gb SATA with a larger one and put the old one in this enclosure

haven't used it much yet, but it's something to think about– just making your own external

DO NOT GET A MYBOOK, TRUST ME. I know several people (myself included) who have had terrible luck with these pieces of shit!
- the reality is that you will find people that have had every drive under the sun fail. they all do eventuallyacescence

Something I learned the hard way: running TM while you're downloading (torrenting, at least) will fuck up every hard drive involved.

personally, I buy Seagate Internal drives and then put myself into cases with fans... that way I know exactly what I'm getting and there's no crapware on the drive....
The only drives I've had die were either:
1. LaCie (2 of them.... not sure why....)
2. a WD myBook, but ENTIRELY my fault, as I plugged the AC adapter from my Thinkpad into the AC adapter power port of the drive and the excess voltage FRIED the drive... strange smell... and yes, it was dumb OF ME, but it's also a dumb design to have the same size power plug for such different power outputs....

mr. usb 3.0 - i hope you only use solid drives too. who the fu, use reg. hd, these days. sooooooo slow.
- hey, time to get 4G phones. but 5G might be on the ways so. what ever you do, you fucked.akrok
- usb3.0 is kinda new, its fast. if it works for you cool. u can buy a WD external that comes with a card if your mb doesnt have one********
- think you mena lightpeak with the 5g reference. yes thats not ready yet********
- and no im not into the SS drives because cost is too high. I will look in on it with a sata6 board and weigh out cost vs performance********
- performance********

The problem with USB is that it doesn't sustain it's peak transfer rates like FW, so even though USB 2.0 may be theoretically faster than say FW 400, the firewire will still smoke it when doing data transfers of any size because it sustains it's speed.

here ya go akrok give it a shot
